What to Expect
Tesla is currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Fastener Test Engineer to support and advise on fastener/joint testing. The position will be based in Fremont (California, USA) within the Fastener Test Lab.
What You’ll Do
Lead the physical testing of fasteners and joints across all Tesla products. Assess risk within upcoming programs and ensure applicable tests are completed within demanding project timelines
Interface with a broad spectrum of internal customers to understand and prioritize testing needs
Independently complete fastener and joint tests in an extremely fast-paced, high pressure environment
Create and manage "Concerns" documentation to facilitate and trace corrective actions to a resolution
Introduce new fastener and joint tests methods into the lab's workstream including method selection (ISO, SAE, VDI etc.), equipment sourcing and deployment, method validation, and training
Communicate effectively with global colleagues and counterparts to ensure consistent implementation of Tesla's testing standards, as well as to ensure prompt cross-implementation of identified testing improvements
Facilitate cost-effective outsourced test activities when appropriate
Lead fastener test technicians to support test setup, test execution, interpret test results, and generate comprehensive and intelligible test reports
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or equivalent experience
3+ years of experience working in a related mechanical/fastener test engineering role
Demonstrated knowledge in fields including bolted joint design, fastener production quality control techniques, mechanical behavior of materials, and experimental statistics
Self-motivated and strong desire to learn new skills and create innovative test methods
Able to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to establish effective working relationships
Experience with fastener/joint tests, (e.g. destructive and non-destructive tests, clamp load, torque, joint slip test)
Hands on experience with torque, angle, and ultrasonic clamp load measurement devices (particularly MC900/MC950)
Experience with a variety of mechanical test methods (e.g. tension, compression, bending, lap shear, fatigue etc.)
Hands-on experience with universal test systems (electro-mechanical and hydraulic) and strain measurement techniques (e.g. strain gauges, digital-image-correlation)

Expected Compensation $80,000 - $174,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
