Summary
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, trouble shooting, training and making work flow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, update patient information.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear but courteous manner.
Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package specimens for transport and store sample according to required temperature, placing samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and labeling properly.
Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required in some states.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED. 0‑2 years of experience.
