About Redwood Materials
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling—keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2019, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have. Mechatronics Engineer, Battery Sorting
We are seeking a Mechatronics Engineer with expertise in automated material handling and industrial automation to design, develop, and optimize high-throughput battery sorting systems for Redwood’s recycling operations. This role will design, integrate, and commission robotic systems to swiftly and accurately classify incoming batteries by chemistry (among other characteristics). The ideal candidate has a background in mechatronics, mechanical design, and control systems, with experience in high-throughput industrial automation. If necessary, we will adjust the job level to suit your experience and responsibilities. Responsibilities will include:
Develop and refine robotic handling systems, including pick‑and‑place mechanisms, sorting, and positioning systems. Design, develop, and optimize conveyor systems and material handling equipment for efficient material transport and processing. Integrate sensors, motors, actuators, and control systems. Collaborate with software, automation, and imaging teams to ensure precise material classification and movement without overcomplicating the solution. Support the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of mechatronic and conveyor‑based systems in our production facilities. Ensure compliance with industrial safety standards and design systems for safe operation in an automated environment. Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. 3+ years of experience in conveyor system design, material handling automation, or industrial mechatronics. Strong understanding of motion control, robotics, and industrial automation systems. Experience working with industrial control systems and sensors for conveyor automation. Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for system design and integration. Knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, and electromechanical actuation for automated material handling. Experience with industrial robots, vision systems, and smart conveyor technologies is a plus. Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform the essential job functions safely and successfully with compliance to ADA, FMLA, and other applicable standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and other applicable standards. Working Conditions:
Environment, such as office or outdoors. Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time. Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing. Occasional weekend, night, or on‑call work as a regular part of the job. Compensation
In accordance with California pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is listed below. Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and skills. $122,500 - $241,500 USD The position is full‑time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
