Essential Duties
Redwood Materials is currently searching for a Head of Sorting Technology to join our engineering team and develop robotics technology to automatically sort battery feedstock at the input to our recycling plants. This is a leadership role with strategic and tactical components; a successful candidate will build and lead a cross‑functional engineering team of software, controls, mechanical, and electrical engineers to create the future of sorting technology for the company.
Responsibilities will include:
Technical lead for the architecture, design, implementation, and test of an automated battery sorting system
People lead for a cross‑functional team of engineers with a focus on growing and mentoring engineers
Building a strong team and culture of safety, execution and innovation through data driven engineering
Collaborating with product, finance, operations and engineering teams to iterate on system requirements that make sense for the business, plant operators, and technical stakeholders for downstream battery consumption
Decision making for make vs. buy for hardware and software components including but not limited to sensors, actuators, conveyor systems, ML infrastructure and compute systems
Requirements authorship for a reliable and accurate production sorting system
Own the technology roadmap for automated sorting systems at the company
Desired Qualifications
BS/MS in Engineering, and 10+ years of engineering and engineering leadership experience in a fast‑paced, highly fluid environment
Proficiency across hardware and software stacks as applied in industries like robotics, vehicle automation, or factory automation
Well versed in all types of machine/automation components, sensors, vision systems, electro‑mechanical actuators, motion control, pneumatics, hydraulics, etc.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
Working Conditions
Environment, such as office or outdoors.
Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time.
Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing.
Occasional work weekends, nights, or be on call as a regular part of the job.
Occasional travel requirements.
In accordance with California pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is listed below. Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and skills.
California Pay Range: $214,000—$345,000 USD
The position is full‑time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
