Sequoias is seeking a qualified and equity‑minded candidate to fill a full‑time, tenure‑track position in the Theatre Department beginning August 2026.

Assignments may include evening classes, online/remote instruction, and teaching at any of the Sequoias Community College District campuses: Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the district by way of committee assignments is encouraged. College of the Sequoias offers lecture‑lab pay parity, as well as overload and large‑lecture compensation that may be additional.

About the Theatre Arts Program College of the Sequoias Theatre Arts is a nationally recognized award‑winning program committed to innovation, equity, and excellence in the classroom and in production. The program is housed in a four‑hundred‑seat proscenium theatre with a full fly loft and state‑of‑the‑art lighting and sound equipment. Support facilities include a 2,500‑sq‑ft scene shop, a well‑equipped costume shop, three dressing rooms and storage facilities. The program offers a well‑rounded curriculum for three separate Associate’s degrees—Theatre Arts for Transfer, Technical Theatre, and Acting. The theatre program produces four fully‑realized productions per year: two in the fall semester and two in the spring, with at least one large‑scale musical in collaboration with the Music and Dance Departments.

Job Duties The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching courses in technical theatre—Stage Lighting, Stagecraft, Intro to Theatre, and/or other areas as qualified—while also serving as Technical Director. The instructor will provide design expertise in at least one capacity for each production: Lighting Designer, Scenic Designer, Sound Designer, or Projection Designer. Additional duties include:

Building and supervising all aspects of lighting and scenery construction for all productions.

Fulfilling at least one design discipline on each production.

Adhering to and participating in the development of production timelines and budgets.

Communicating technical progress as requested.

Safely operating the scene shop and participating in load‑in, set‑up, and strike.

Occasional movement and transportation of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Availability during evening and weekend rehearsals and productions.

Maintaining regular office hours, engaging with campus culture, and fulfilling departmental responsibilities.

Creating and sustaining an equitable atmosphere respectful of diversity district‑wide.

Qualifications The candidate must meet the following criteria:

Master’s or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance

or

Bachelor’s or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance

and

Master’s in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities

or

the equivalent.

Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students pursuant to Title 5 §53022.

Experience and knowledge of safety compliance rules (OSHA, industry safety compliance), and mastery of theatrical lighting and construction tools and equipment.

Strong organizational, management and supervisory skills over electric and construction crews.

Evidence of teaching a full load of classes while accomplishing production work concurrently.

Commitment to mentoring students and working with diverse student populations.

Desirable Qualifications

Master’s or Master of Fine Arts in Technical Direction, Technical Theatre, or Design & Technology.

History of work in theatre demonstrating exemplary completion of duties and flexibility to respond to emergent challenges.

Experience as a Technical Director and in at least one of the following: Lighting Design, Scenic Design, Sound Design, Projection Design.

Expertise in drafting using VectorWorks or AutoCAD.

Extensive knowledge of OSHA, industry safety compliance rules and safe use of theatrical equipment.

Ability to supervise electric and construction crews.

History of cultivating respectful, courteous, and cooperative relationships and implementing affirmative, efficient, and ethical working practices.

Experience teaching or working in education and maintaining professional development, creative activity, and service.
