TREASURER‑TAX COLLECTOR SPECIALIST

The County of San Diego's Department of Treasurer‑Tax Collector has openings for this position. Interviews will begin the week of January 26 2026 and will be in‑person. Job offers will be issued shortly after the interviews.

Division: Information (Call Center) The Information division provides customers with information on all aspects of tax collection—including bills, payments, refunds, corrections and pay‑plans—and answers inquiries in person, by telephone, or in a high‑volume call center environment.
Collect and post tax payments; accounting for payments received
Compile and record financial transactions
Respond to and process correspondence
Mail out tax bills
Conduct research of tax rolls and payment issues
Support cashiering and customer service operations in the East County, San Marcos, and Downtown San Diego branches
The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, works well with minimal supervision, communicates with the public, County employees and external agencies with confidence and tact, and can research and analyze property records and financial data.
Division: Financial The Financial division performs financial transactions, researches and analyzes tax‑payment processing data, and supports the Tax Collection staff.
Balance, adjust, review and reconcile accounts
Process payment adjustments and calculate refunds and interest
Interact with real estate agents, title companies, lending and mortgage companies on tax issues
Answer tax, treasury, financial and related questions at the public counter and by telephone
Conduct research of financial and tax transactions in support of the Tax Collection staff
Ideal candidate profile: detail‑oriented, works independently, communicates professionally, and researches and analyzes property tax billing and payment records.
Division: Special Functions The Special Functions division collects taxes on personal property and specialty taxes such as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) and Racehorse tax.
Calculate tax payments and set up payment plans
Verify self‑reported taxes, record and release liens
Maintain electronic and paper records
Balance and adjust accounts, analyze and reconcile financial reports
Interact with taxpayers, attorneys, real estate agents and title/lending companies on property tax issues
Ideal candidate profile: detail‑oriented, works independently, communicates with the public, County employees and external agencies with confidence and tact, and can research and analyze property records and financial data.
Hiring Process and Timeline
Job offer and background process begins shortly after interviews (current County employees may be exempt from background screening).
Pre‑employment medical screening, approximately 3 days after successful background investigation.
Anticipated start date based on completion of medical screening or mutually agreed date.
Minimum Qualifications
One (1) year of experience processing financial or accounting transactions in a Treasurer‑Tax Collector's office in California,
or
Two (2) years of clerical experience, including one (1) year of experience processing financial or accounting transactions.
Completion of twelve (12) units in accounting or taxation from an accredited college or university may substitute for one (1) year of the required work experience in the second qualification. Customer service experience is highly desirable.
