Duties
The Emergency Department Chief is a medical officer at the FVHCS and is responsible for the quality of care and the utilization of health care resources at the facility and within the community. The incumbent functions as an emergency department provider and administrator who must have strong managerial and organization skills as well as extensive clinical knowledge. The Fargo VA Healthcare System Emergency Department provides care to approximately 9500 patients per year. Patients seen principally have a wide range of medical problems with occasional minor trauma. Two years of emergency department management experience is required. A primary objective of the Chief of the Emergency Department is to mentor and lead competent, satisfied staff dedicated to providing high quality patient-centered care at the Fargo VA Health Care System (FVAHCS). The incumbent is responsible for the direct management and oversight of clinical and administrative operations within the Fargo VA Healthcare System Emergency Department. These duties include supervision (direct or indirect) of physicians, NPs and PAs in the Emergency Department, coordination of work schedules and responsibility for clinical performance measures. The incumbent works closely with other leaders within the ICC and facility to ensure optimization of resources in the care delivery model. Additionally, s/he participates in facility administrative, management, quality assurance, and other duties as necessary or assigned. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 0800 - 1630. Full-time staff are required to work a minimum of 80 hrs. per pay period (every two weeks) unless on leave status. The E.D. Chief may have to cover unexpected vacancies in the schedule as they arise.
