Chief Engineer, Aerospace Electrification
Eaton’s corporate Research Labs team is seeking a Chief Engineer to support Aerospace Electrification. This position can be based in one of the following locations within the US: Golden, CO, Raleigh, NC, Southfield, MI, Galesburg, MI, Menomonee Falls, WI, Pittsburgh, PA, Beachwood, OH, or Irvine, CA. Other large Eaton locations in the US can be considered. Candidates must be based within 50 miles of these locations as relocation assistance is not available. Up to 25% travel is expected on average.
The expected annual salary range for this role is $145,500.03 - $213,400.04 a year. This position is also eligible for a variable incentive program. The Chief Engineer – Aerospace Electrification will initiate, lead, and create research and develop emerging technology programs for Aerospace Electrification. This leader will develop solid relationships with both engineering and business leaders at the highest levels within Eaton to drive strong business cases for new commercial applications and acquire needed resources and funding (including US Government).
What You’ll Do
As a recognized authority in the field, work closely with other electrification experts to develop the technology and strategies for broad aerospace applications within the Energy Systems team.
Serve as a principal investigator on key projects, responsible for developing and meeting project schedules, defining scope of work, cost, technical targets, and report preparation for all research and innovation themes under your control.
Develop and maintain relationships with the external technical community (academia, national labs, government agencies, industry groups, international events), mentor staff and consult with key internal stakeholders and customers.
Create and define research and technology focused themes, participate in defining technology investment strategy and lead complex global technology realization programs in Aerospace Electrification.
Work with GTDs across Eaton globally to define technical competencies and capabilities required to support technology strategy, including defining and refining lab technical capabilities and requirements and working with GTD's to attract technical talent.
Create emerging Energy Systems research programs based on breakthrough technologies necessary for energy transition, reliability, and efficiency in the aerospace industry.
Further advance state of the art energy and power systems and identify and develop commercialization opportunities with Eaton’s diverse global businesses.
Own technical leadership through aerospace electrification roadmaps and collaborate with multi-disciplinary globally distributed teams.
Identify program/project risks and influence key stakeholders to make pivot/persevere/kill decisions.
Influence, resolve and communicate major changes in projects or program achievements to cross-functional teams across all levels.
Coordinate and influence the research focus of partnering university consortiums and national lab initiatives.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Minimum 15 years of professional experience, including time in the aerospace electrification industry.
Experience working on government proposals, programs, or contracts within an organization.
Access to export‑controlled information: applicant must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee).
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD from an accredited institution in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
Experience as a Principal Investigator in a research setting.
Position Criteria
Expertise with aerospace propulsion or power systems.
Expertise in one or more of the following areas: vehicle/aircraft electrical distribution architecture modeling and analysis; circuit protection and advanced control system design; energy storage systems for aircraft applications; thermal and air management for aircraft. This includes creating specifications, defining application space, modeling and designing technical solution concepts, building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses, and documenting results.
Extensive experience in leading engineering groups and mentoring engineering talent to develop concepts and prototypes for bench and in‑vehicle demonstrations, especially when requirements are unknown or incomplete.
Extensive experience in developing proposals and winning government‑funded programs related to transportation electrification.
Abilities and documented track record leading externally‑funded programs, interacting with customers’ and partners’ advanced research and development organizations.
