STAFF NURSE – ALLERGY CLINIC / 40 Hours – Full Time – Rotating Variable / BWH – CHESTNUT HILL

General Summary / Overview The RN is a professional nurse registered in Massachusetts who is responsible and accountable for a specified group of patients in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at 850 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill and other off-site locations, including but not limited to Brigham Medical Specialties at the Brigham Main Campus, Foxboro Medical Specialties, Faulkner Medical Specialties, and Hale Rheumatology. The RN demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills in caring for patients with complex needs and manages patients by assuming full responsibility for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. The RN is directly responsible to the Nurse Director and Practice Manager.
Responsibilities
Administer allergen immunotherapy / desensitization, allergy testing, oral challenge techniques, mixing and dilution of allergen extracts, patient education of allergen environmental control measures and the use of metered dose inhalers, spacer devices, etc., and perform pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry.
Provide telephone triage and contact patients for changes in management.
Maintain the department’s perpetual inventory of samples and dispense samples per physician directions.
Participate in the organization of patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for assigned patients; set priorities and maintain continuity through clear communication.
Ensure quality of care with proper documentation, development of comprehensive plans of care, patient and family education, and discharge planning including relevant tests and referrals.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the care plan and revise as needed; participate in quality management programs and maintain JCASHO and DPH standards; ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Administer medications safely according to policies and procedures; manage allergen immunotherapy, allergy testing, and other procedures requiring a nursing license; take vital signs and perform PFTs as needed.
Triages patient telephone calls and relays information to physicians; manage documentation and communication with the care team.

Education & Experience Education
Graduate of an approved school of nursing with current registration in Massachusetts.
For newly licensed nurses, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is required.
Experience
1. Recent experience in an ambulatory outpatient setting (within 5 years) required.
2. Recent pediatric experience required.
3. Recent experience in Allergy required.
4. Recent procedural experience required.
5. Recent knowledge and experience with telephone triage required.
6. Current experience with the following skills preferred: allergy immunotherapy/desensitization; allergy testing methods; oral challenge techniques; preparation and mixing of allergen extracts; dilution of allergen extracts; patient education regarding environmental control measures and inhaler use; performance of pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry; skin testing including venoms and penicillin; aspirin desensitizations; McKesson medication ordering; entering charges for allergy testing.
