Job Summary The Registered Staff Nurse is a professional nurse who renders quality nursing care. Nursing care is based upon the assessed needs of the patient, is congruent with the prescribed therapy of the medical staff, and aligns with the Nursing Department’s philosophy of nursing and the Hospital’s mission, vision, and values. The Registered Staff Nurse will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for all patients and is accountable for delivering quality patient care, utilizing the nursing process for patients from birth through adulthood.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Collect and document all data pertinent to each patient’s needs within twenty-four (24) hours of admission.

Document and report significant findings of ongoing patient assessment.

Formulate the patient plan of care based on age‑specific needs and standards of practice.

Communicate the patient plan (written/verbal) through shift reports and other established procedures.

Create a discharge plan (with guidance as needed) within twenty-four (24) hours of admission.

Implement and document teaching plans in the patient record.

Organize own patient care, set priorities, and implement physician and nursing orders within appropriate timeframes.

Administer treatments, procedures, and equipment appropriate to the unit, demonstrating proficiency via a skills checklist.

Safely administer medications and document them according to established procedures, with no more than three documented errors per year.

Use standard precautions as outlined in the Nursing Department Infection Control Manual.

Prioritize patient and unit needs.

Complete discharge screening tool upon admission, appropriate referrals, and formulate individualized teaching plans based on discharge needs.

Evaluate nursing interventions and adjust to changing patient situations, as reflected in patient outcomes and documentation.

Attend all mandatory Hospital/Nursing Department in‑service training sessions and meetings.

Participate actively in 75% of unit staff meetings, Nursing Steering Committee, patient care conferences, and/or one project per year.

Maintain a high‑standard patient care environment and support nursing staff.

Assume responsibility for open communication, consensus decision‑making, group goal setting, and shared responsibility.

Function collaboratively with other health professionals.

Show consideration toward patients, families, and Hospital personnel with professional communication.

Adhere to policy, maintain professional dress and hygiene, and wear identification badge at all times.

Participate in disciplinary and performance improvement activities.

Identify limitations in skills and knowledge and seek guidance when needed.

Meet individual annual goals aligned with Nursing Department objectives.

Demonstrate leadership skills and intervene safely in acute unit problems.

Assist other staff during orientation or as requested.

Contribute to the development and implementation of Nursing Department goals and objectives.

When acting as Day Charge Nurse, attend discharge planning meetings.

When acting as Clinical Director, provide guidance to units to coordinate, direct, and evaluate Nursing Department activities.

Serve as onsite nursing administrative authority when directed.

Maintain confidentiality of organizational and patient information as per Hospital policy.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Coordinate and supervise staff assignments; check completion of duties.

Communicate tactfully with internal and external customers.

Use telephone, fax, copier, and all nursing‑practice equipment.

Stand/walk 90% of shift; lift patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.

Use hands, fingers, arms, wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills.

Have color vision for recognizing skin color changes and using color‑coded tubing.

Utilize PPE (face shield/mask, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses).

Credentials and Experience Required

Graduate of an accredited nursing school; Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.

Three (3) years of related experience preferred.

Current, valid Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

Professional certification in applicable nursing field(s) preferred.

BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire; AHA & ARC accepted.

ACLS and PALS certification required prior to completion of orientation or within 6 months of hire.

TNCC & NRP preferred.

CPI/AVADE/MOAB training preferred.

Special Requirements

Must be available for day, evening, night, weekend shifts, and unit rotations.

Must be willing to work additional shifts as assigned.

Must be available to stay overnight for patient transports off island if needed.

May be exposed to temperature fluctuations, moderate noise, minimal dust, infectious diseases, chemicals, and hazards related to patient transports.

Must be available for overtime and emergency circumstances.
