Engineering Supervisor – Campus & Experiences Division, National Geographic Society, Washington, DC
Overview The National Geographic Society's headquarters (Base Camp) is undergoing a major renovation to create the National Geographic Museum of Exploration. The Campus & Experiences team is responsible for delivering operational excellence across the project, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) systems, plant operations, building automation, vendor management, and project control.
Responsibilities Building Systems Management (55%)
Operate and maintain HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, air handlers, pumps, and related equipment.
Conduct routine preventive maintenance inspections to keep building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems functioning efficiently and safely.
Respond promptly to maintenance requests, alarms, and emergency situations, troubleshooting and repairing equipment failures.
Perform repairs and installations of minor mechanical, plumbing, and electrical components.
Monitor and adjust the Building Automation System (BAS) for occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and museum conservation. Train staff on BAS functions and troubleshoot complex tasks.
Recommend upgrades or enhancements to systems to maintain maximum efficiency and compliance with modern standards.
Team Leadership & Development (20%)
Lead, mentor, and manage engineering staff, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.
Conduct performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and identify professional development opportunities.
Coordinate with Supervising Engineers to ensure proper shift coverage and workload distribution.
Foster a safe work environment and ensure staff use equipment safely and efficiently.
Contractor & Project Management (15%)
Oversee contracted work across the complex, from preventive maintenance to emergency repairs and new installations.
Act as primary point of contact for contractors, managing scheduling, access, and on‑site activity.
Review contractor performance to ensure compliance with contracts, safety protocols, and Society standards.
Assist with capital projects and system replacements.
Administrative & Operational Support (10%)
Review the CMMS for new priority work orders and record equipment data and unusual events in the daily logbook.
Communicate system status and open issues to the next shift operator.
Assist in managing the departmental budget for maintenance, supplies, and contract services.
Oversee procurement of supplies, parts, and equipment with a focus on cost‑effectiveness and quality.
Maintain necessary permits and certifications for building equipment.
Generate reports on system performance, team productivity, and project status for leadership.
Ensure all tools are accounted for at shift closure.
Qualifications Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED with completion of an Apprenticeship or Technical degree from an accredited trade school.
Minimum Experience
4 years of progressive experience in building systems and plant operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
Knowledge and Skills
3rd class DC Stationary Engineer license for the District of Columbia.
CFC Universal Certification.
Extensive experience in building systems and BAS operations.
Proficient in standard Microsoft software and CMMS systems.
Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Experience managing third‑party contractors and vendors.
Ability to engage a diverse audience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in a museum, cultural institution, or public‑facing campus environment.
Journeyman‑level licensure in a building trade.
Any relevant industry certifications.
Supervision The role supervises a team of four direct reports.
Salary and Benefits Salary range: $43.85 – $46.15 (per hour).
