Position Summary The Director of Nursing reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and provides strategic leadership and administration in patient care, education, safety, and quality. This role promotes a professional practice environment and builds collaborative partnerships with physicians, nursing, interdisciplinary teams, and organizational leaders to positively impact clinical operations and patient outcomes. Responsibilities include clinical operations oversight, leadership strategies, employee engagement, education, patient safety, financial performance, quality management, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with administrators, physicians, and interdisciplinary providers to plan, implement, and evaluate strategic initiatives.

Model and encourage professional nursing practice emphasizing autonomy, accountability, and empowerment.

Conduct coaching and counseling sessions with direct reports for performance improvement and professional development.

Oversee development and implementation of care delivery models aligned with professional and regulatory standards.

Monitor and analyze operational performance, adjusting resources as needed to achieve goals.

Identify issues and lead process improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.

Advocate for resources to ensure safe patient care delivery, including staffing, equipment, and facilities.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required

Master’s degree or completion within 2 years of hire

Experience:

Minimum 5 years RN experience in specialty area

Minimum 3 years in a nurse leadership role

Systems-level leadership experience preferred

Licensure/Certifications:

Current District of Columbia RN license

BLS certification

Leadership or specialty certification within one year of hire

Ability to manage resources effectively and motivate staff

Working Conditions

Primarily day shifts; evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

Physical activity includes sitting (50–70%), walking (10–30%), and occasional bending, squatting, lifting, and pushing
