Role Overview Under the general direction of the Clinic Medical Director and Physician Assistant Supervisor, the Physician Assistant performs operational level duties for Hematology/Oncology patients or approved patients in the Infusion Center, with a major emphasis on patient care delivery and patient management. The PA conducts in-depth interviews, constructs comprehensive medical histories, performs initial and periodic medical exams, evaluates patient signs and symptoms, directly performs or orders diagnostic studies, interprets results, and develops and implements long‑ and short‑range treatment plans. The PA provides patient counseling, assists with patient follow‑up care, and serves as a resource to Hematology/Oncology faculty and nursing staff. The PA utilizes EMR to document all encounters and bill appropriately. The PA will also be expected to participate in educational activities for all levels of staff and students.
Responsibilities
Conduct in‑depth interviews and construct comprehensive medical histories.
Perform initial and periodic medical exams and evaluate patient signs and symptoms.
Directly perform or order diagnostic studies, interpret completed results, and develop treatment plans.
Provide patient counseling and assist with patient follow‑up care.
Serve as a resource to Hematology/Oncology faculty and nursing staff.
Utilize EMR to document all encounters and bill appropriately.
Participate in educational activities for staff and students.
Qualifications
Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
Licensed Physician Assistant in the State of California.
Valid/Current CA Physician Assistant Certification and DEA Number.
BLS and ACLS certifications required within 1st month of employment.
Experience in educating patients, nursing staff, and community about chemotherapy treatments and side effects.
Clear understanding of core oncology principles.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Division and UCI Health System.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
Knowledge of the elements of a medical history and skill in the history‑taking process.
Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
Preferred Qualifications
Focused experience in Hematology/Oncology.
Previous experience working as a Physician Assistant in Hematology/Oncology.
Knowledge of university and medical center organizations, policies, procedures, and forms.
Experience creating and reviewing standard protocols for chemotherapy and oncology patients.
Experience in direct patient care for chemotherapy side effects and with infusion patients.
Experience working with immune‑suppressed patients.
Ability to obtain UCI Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
Compensation and Benefits The compensation range for this position is $75,000 – $85,000 annually.
