Tax Experienced Manager, Corporate/ASC 740 Focus Job Description

The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The manager applies his knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes and communicates potential risks and policy changes, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. Additionally, the manager serves as a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participates in marketing, networking and business development while maintaining client relationships.

Responsibilities

Tax Compliance

Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens and ensures self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).

Conducts top‑level review of tax returns and resolves all tax issues with clients, involving specialists where appropriate.

Communicates with clients and Assurance on any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.

Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with clients and/or partners as appropriate.

Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.

Provides timely advice to clients.

Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures, including budgeting and staffing.

Monitors engagement process and actual time incurred versus budget, assisted by senior staff.

Handles timely billing, including management of out‑of‑scope activity and client communication.

Ensures timely collection of accounts receivable.

Research

Identifies when research is needed and frames issues clearly for the team.

Designs efficient research methodology and involves firm specialists as appropriate.

Trains managers and staff on research skills.

ASC 740 (FAS 109 & FIN 48) Tax Accruals

Applies Firm policies and standards, including ASC 740, proactively in practice work.

Helps others learn and apply ASC 740 and related policies.

Reviews tax provisions and prepares workpapers.

Explains and discusses ASC 740 components and uncertain tax positions with clients.

Tax Consulting

Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce taxes.

Applies tax knowledge and business/industry insight for solutions.

Manages risk while maximizing client benefits.

Consults with specialists when appropriate.

Monitors implementation of client service plans.

Manages inquiries from federal and state agencies with minimal assistance.

Provides assistance with protests at the appeals level.

Implements applicable Firm strategies and manages client expectations.

Tax Specialization

Develops in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas.

Organizes and conducts external CPE training sessions at least once per year.

Trains and mentors managers, seniors, and associates in specialization areas.

Strategy Development

Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to enhance client, firm, or personnel positions.

Researches and implements tax strategies, experimenting with new ideas.

Consistently suggests improvements to previous work products or approaches.

May present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.

Other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.

Reviews work prepared by associates and seniors and provides review comments.

Trains associates and seniors in current software tools.

Acts as a career advisor to associates and seniors.

Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and seniors.

Education

Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.

Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision‑making skills.

Capacity to work well in a team environment.

Capability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals.

Ability to compose written tax advice.

Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for presentation of issues and resolutions.

Experience

Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required.

Prior supervisory experience, required.

Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties, preferred.

License/Certifications

CPA certification, attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA), or an equivalent designation required.

Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.

Software

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Illinois: $120,000 – $139,000

Maryland: $121,000 – $145,000

Massachusetts: $130,000 – $147,750

Minnesota: $100,000 – $130,000

New Jersey: $130,000 – $165,000

NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $170,000 – $185,000

Washington: $131,400 – $160,000

Washington DC: $140,000 – $162,000
