Job Summary The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Tax Experienced Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The Manager will also be a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participate in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise while maintaining client relationships.

Job Duties

Tax Compliance

Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).

Conducts top‑level review of tax returns and resolves all tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriate.

Communicates with client and Assurance any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.

Plans early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate.

Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.

Provides timely advice to the client.

Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures to include: budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior, timely billing, management of identified out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client, and timely collection of A/R.

Research

Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched; and reports the analysis concisely.

Identifies complex issues for engagement team research and provides efficient research methodology.

Trains managers and staff on research skills and helps to frame tax issues for analysis.

Involves firm specialists as appropriate.

ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals

Applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48, and helps others learn and apply ASC 740.

Reviews tax provisions and applies in‑depth knowledge of ASC 740 where applicable.

May review prepared workpapers.

Explains and discusses with the client the components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions and other complexities surrounding ASC 740.

Tax Consulting

Assists in developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.

Applies a combination of tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions.

Maximizes client benefits while managing risk.

Confers with STS specialists to determine applicability of STS consulting specialties to each client; involves STS when appropriate.

Monitors implementation of work plans (client service plan) for tax consulting projects.

Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.

May provide assistance with protests at the appeals level.

Implements applicable Firm strategies and manages client expectations.

Tax Specialization

Develops an in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more tax areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).

May be required to organize and conduct or participate in effective external CPE training sessions in the area of specialization at least once per year.

May train and mentor managers, seniors and associates on specialization areas.

Strategy Development

Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel.

Researches and implements tax strategies, experimenting with promising new strategies and ideas.

Consistently makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches.

May present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.

Other duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.

Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.

Trains associates and seniors on current software tools.

May act as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.

Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education:

Bachelor's degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferred.

Masters in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.

Experience:

Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, required.

Prior supervisory experience, required.

Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty, preferred.

License/Certifications:

CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required.

Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred.

Software:

Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, preferred.

Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred.

Individual salaries are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

California Range: $136,000 - $165,000 Colorado Range: $115,000 - $165,000 Illinois Range: $120,000 - $139,000 Maryland Range: $121,000 - $145,000 Massachusetts Range: $130,000 - $147,750 Minnesota Range: $100,000 - $130,000 New Jersey Range: $130,000 - $165,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $170,000 - $185,000 Washington Range: $131,400 - $160,000 Washington DC Range: $140,000 - $162,000
