Introduction The University of Rochester Medical Center – Strong Memorial Hospital is an 897‑bed quaternary referral center located on the shores of Lake Ontario. It includes Level 1 trauma, transplant, stroke, cancer, and children’s services and serves as the primary teaching site for medical, nursing, and pharmacy students.
Position Summary The Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is responsible for oversight and management of appropriate antimicrobial therapy at the University of Rochester Medical Center. This includes overseeing a comprehensive pharmacy‑based program to educate, monitor, and report on utilization of antimicrobial therapies for staff, providers, and administration. The specialist serves as a resource on anti‑infective pharmacotherapy, prepares and dispenses prescriptions, and participates in multi‑disciplinary rounds.
Typical Duties
Provide comprehensive clinical pharmacy services for a specialized area of pharmacy practice
Participation on inter‑disciplinary patient care team rounds as appropriate.
Consultative input on safe and effective drug therapy.
Daily management of established clinical pharmacy programs or services.
Monitor assigned patient populations for clinical progress and recommend adjustments.
Patient education and discharge counseling.
Authorizing/verifying orders.
Supervising drug distribution when appropriate.
Document clinical pharmacy activities in the medical record or other systems.
Work collaboratively with clinicians and health‑care providers to implement medication‑management programs.
Participate in the development of global medication use management programs within URMC.
Provide clinical leadership within the specialty and mentor pharmacists in the department.
Direct and supervise technicians to ensure workflow.
Communicate verbally to all hospital staff professionally.
Conduct QA, MUE, or other research to document the value of clinical pharmacy services.
Participate in departmental QA processes, including incident reporting, MAR reconciliation, and cost‑saving initiatives.
Training
Maintain a commitment to training future pharmacists
Serve as a preceptor for pharmacy residency training programs at URMC.
Contribute to student training for IPPE and APPE rotations.
Provide didactic lectures, case studies, and interactive teaching programs.
Provide didactic lectures to divisions and departments of the medical center as requested.
Problem Solving
Resolve problems with direct communication to all pertinent staff.
Proactively identify patient‑care problems and pursue resolution.
Participate in interdisciplinary teams to revise policies, procedures, or treatment guidelines.
Contact supervisor when a solution is beyond expertise or authority.
Service
Active membership and participation in local, regional, and national professional organizations.
Present clinical education or research at meetings.
Provide continuing education to peers and the community.
Serve on departmental, hospital, or medical‑center committees or task forces.
Requirements
Licensed or eligible for licensure in New York State.
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).
Advanced training (residency, fellowship, and/or board certification) in infectious disease or equivalent experience.
