Senior Mechanical Engineer – Nuclear Services
Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our nuclear services team and contribute to the design, analysis, and construction of nuclear facilities.
Location:
Chattanooga, TN (hybrid schedule – minimum 3 days in office Tue–Thu, remote possible from Chicago area)
Travel:
Candidates must be willing to travel to plant sites and support outages (≈6–8 days/month, longer during outages).
Education / Experience / Licensure
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university –
required
Master of Science or other advanced engineering degree – preferred
PE registration –
highly preferred
(or ability to obtain within 1 year)
Minimum 6 years experience in design and 4 years in design of modifications in nuclear commercial plants
Experience performing pipe stress analysis using AutoPIPE (or similar) – highly preferred
Experience with multiple operating nuclear clients, specifically Constellation Nuclear – highly preferred
On‑site and unescorted access at operating or construction nuclear plant –
required
Experience with Industry Standard Design Procedure IP‑ENG‑001 –
required
Strong knowledge of mechanical design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, NFPA)
Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Vault, Plant3D, Inventor, ReCap, SolidWorks, FARO Scene)
Responsibilities
Support proposal development and guide other engineers in deliverables for nuclear projects within the Mechanical discipline
Act as Project Engineer for mechanical projects when required and report to assigned Project Engineer / Project Manager
Serve as technical point of contact for the customer and provide area expertise in industry‑standard design and calculations for commercial nuclear modifications
Prepare design change packages (ECs) for modifications at operating nuclear plants and other facility
Prepare scoping documents and proposals to determine extent of modifications and cost estimates for mechanical design activities
Conduct field walk‑downs to determine existing configuration of plant structures, systems, and components
Perform broad range of mechanical design activities to support development of design change documentation
Successful Candidates Will
Have design engineering experience associated with commercial nuclear sites
Be able to interpret codes, regulations, and standard practices
Demonstrate adaptability and proficiency in troubleshooting and resolving issues in a nuclear power plant environment
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills (technical writing)
Interface effectively with customers and internal team members under a matrixed organization
