Senior Mechanical Engineer - Nuclear
Mesa Associates is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our nuclear services team and contribute to the design, analysis, and construction of nuclear facilities. This is an opportunity to play a critical role in the engineering and design processes for commercial nuclear power generation.
Location : Lisle, IL Salary : $100,000 – $130,000
Work schedule : Hybrid – minimum 3 days in office (Tuesday‑Thursday) or remote from the Chicago, IL area. Candidates must be able to travel to plant sites and support outages (approx. 6‑8 days/month, longer during outages).

Education / Experience / Licensure
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university (required)
Master of Science or other advanced degree in engineering (preferred)
PE registration (highly preferred) – or ability to obtain a PE license within one year of employment (required)
Minimum of 6 years’ experience in design and 4 years’ experience in modification design for nuclear commercial plants
Experience performing pipe stress analysis using AutoPIPE or a similar software (highly preferred)
Experience working with multiple operating nuclear clients, specifically Constellation Nuclear, and vendors (highly preferred)
On‑site and past unescorted access, or ability to obtain unescorted access at an operating or construction nuclear plant (required)
Experience with Industry Standard Design Procedure IP‑ENG‑001 (required)
Strong knowledge of mechanical design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, NFPA)
Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Additional software skills—including Bluebeam, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Vault, Plant3D, Inventor, ReCap, SolidWorks, FARO Scene, and other 3D rendering programs (preferred)
Responsibilities
Support proposal development and guide other engineers in creating deliverables for nuclear projects within the Mechanical discipline
Report to an assigned Project Engineer and Project Manager on multi‑discipline proposals and projects, and act as a Project Engineer for Mechanical projects when required
Act as a technical point of contact for the customer, providing expertise in design and calculations for commercial nuclear modifications
Collaborate with other engineers and designers to prepare design change packages for operating nuclear plants and related facilities
Prepare engineering change packages (ECs)
Prepare scoping documents and proposals to determine the extent of modifications required, including cost estimates for Mechanical engineering/design activities
Conduct field walk‑downs to assess existing configurations of plant structures, systems, and components
Perform a broad range of Mechanical design activities to support development of design change documentation
Successful Candidates Will
Have design engineering experience associated with commercial nuclear sites
Possess the ability to interpret codes, regulations, and standard practices
Be able to demonstrate adaptability and troubleshoot issues within a nuclear power plant environment
Have effective oral and written communication skills (including technical writing)
Possess excellent communication skills to interface with customers and internal team members under a matrixed organization
A strong background in commercial nuclear design and developing engineering competencies is required.
