Team Lead – Underwriting Operations

Maximum supervisory scope of up to five underwriting support staff, including Technical Assistants, Technical Specialists, Underwriting Assistants and/or Senior UAs.

Ensure the team achieves all service delivery, timeliness, productivity and quality goals.

Identify and communicate regulatory compliance issues.

Oversee human resource management: coaching, counseling, goal‑setting and staff development.

Provide guidance, motivation and promote teamwork in partnership with the underwriters the unit supports.

Directly manage people or serve in a non‑people‑managing role based on managerial discretion.

Oversee development, training and cross‑training of employees.

Assist with performance evaluations, recommend salary adjustments and coach staff.

Collaborate with the Operations Manager to set unit and individual goals.

Assist in interviewing and hiring new employees for the department.

Ensure compliance with predetermined workflows and procedures.

Ensure work is completed in accordance with service standards, including owning a book of business within the team.

Manage work in process and service delivery of the unit.

Track and report weekly/monthly production.

Keep Department Management informed of status and progress.

Coordinate schedule for sick and vacation time, managing backup staff as needed.

Schedule and obtain approval for overtime.

Plan and organize actions for self and others to ensure efficient work completion.

Ensure compliance with Internal Audit, Peer Reviews, and/or FIC audit.

Assist with developing responses and action plans for internal and external audit findings.

Translate quality, timeliness, productivity and service delivery requirements into performance goals and measurement plans.

Support IT development efforts as a subject‑matter expert when required.

Provide day‑to‑day operational direction to staff.

Maintain open communication with the underwriters for partnership and teamwork.

Maintain effectiveness during changes in responsibilities or environment.

Review and manage production and quality control reports; take appropriate action on data quality, reinsurance, and status reports.

Attend meetings on behalf of the Operations Leader, reporting back on issues and action items.

Administrator of assigned accounts throughout the lifecycle.

Collect account and insured information for risk analysis by communicating with brokers.

Liaise with Underwriters and Brokers to communicate account status and complete outstanding tasks.

Liaise with Underwriters to confirm policy issuance instructions for proprietary policies, endorsements, forms, notices, etc., and communicate to the Coding and Issuance Unit.

Perform pre‑analysis support for new submissions, renewals, endorsements, and other documents based on underwriting rules and guidelines.

Ensure completeness of underwriting package before handover to the Underwriter.

Analyze client needs and translate into policy specifications.

Handle accounts with intricate parts to ensure complete and seamless broker communication.

Complete quality control on rating output for accuracy (e.g., limits, coverage extensions, modifications).

Accurately compile supporting account detail in electronic format using PDF tools.

Generate broker correspondence in electronic format (e‑mail, eFax) related to transaction processing and follow‑up.

Collaborate and correspond verbally and in writing with Underwriting Support Unit team members and other operational support units.

What you’ll bring

College degree or equivalent experience, with advanced insurance study preferred.

Some to moderate experience in P&C insurance business.

Appropriate combination of commercial P&C insurance rating, coding and underwriting assistant skills.

Advanced knowledge of commercial P&C insurance policy forms and regulatory requirements.

Familiarity with insurance operating systems used to rate, code, track or issue policies.

Skilled with MS Office desktop software.

Knowledge of commercial P&C insurance products and tools such as ISO, NCCI, regulatory and other informational websites.

Proactive, self‑directed with robust time‑management, problem‑solving and analytical skills.

Ability to handle multiple priorities and work with limited direct supervision.

The U.S. base salary range for this position is USD 73,800 to $116,500.

Actual pay will be determined based upon the individual’s skills, experience and location. We strive for market alignment and internal equity with our colleagues’ pay.
