The
Business Development Director – CMC
will be responsible for driving new business and expanding partnerships across the West Coast biotech and pharmaceutical ecosystem. This individual will identify, engage, and secure development and manufacturing programs across
CMC, API, and Drug Product services , collaborating closely with internal technical teams to deliver impactful solutions for clients.
This is a high-visibility, high-impact commercial role suited for a proven CDMO business development leader with strong scientific credibility and an established biotech network.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and execute a West Coast business development strategy focused on acquiring early-to-late-stage small-molecule development programs.
Identify and engage target biotech and pharmaceutical companies to generate new project opportunities.>
Position integrated CDMO capabilities including
API synthesis, formulation development, analytical services, CMC development, and DP manufacturing
to prospective clients.
Build and nurture strong, long-term client relationships with C-suite, R&D, CMC, and Technical Operations leaders.
Lead the full BD lifecycle: prospecting, technical discussions, proposal coordination, SOW negotiation, and contract execution.
Collaborate cross-functionally with internal scientific SMEs, project management, operations, and leadership teams to ensure accurate scoping and successful onboarding of programs.
Maintain a strong opportunity pipeline and consistently meet or exceed quarterly and annual revenue targets.
Represent the company at industry conferences, networking events, and client meetings across the region.
Qualifications & Experience
5–10+ years of business development experience within a
CDMO , CRO, or CMC-focused outsourcing organization.
Strong technical understanding of
small-molecule development , including formulation, analytical methods, API synthesis, and CMC processes.
Proven track record of winning development and manufacturing projects with emerging biotechs.
Existing network within the West Coast biotech ecosystem is highly preferred.
Ability to communicate complex scientific and operational concepts with credibility to technical and executive stakeholders.
Skilled negotiator with experience developing MSAs, SOWs, pricing strategies, and partnership frameworks.
Self-driven, solutions-oriented, and effective in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced scientific degree or MBA preferred.
Willingness to travel regionally
