Job Title: Director, Reliability Engineering
Location: MACOM North Carolina Semiconductor Center – RTP
Position Overview This position will manage the technology development semiconductor reliability and failure analysis functions within our advanced technology development team. It includes customer engagement on reliability related issues and influences reliability strategy and execution across MACOM. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise across a broad spectrum of semiconductor technologies, proven leadership in building and scaling teams, and a strong track record of driving reliability and failure analysis standards and methodologies across the industry.
Key Responsibilities
Design and execute experiments to optimize reliability, performance and yields for new technology process platform development.
Influence process and product reliability strategies across MACOM’s B.U.’s to improve reliability, reduce cost, and improve efficiency of execution.
Build and manage a high performing reliability and failure analysis team supporting MACOM’s broad process and product portfolios.
Develop and implement reliability qualification strategies for advanced semiconductor devices and packages (discrete, integrated circuits and power modules).
Manage all process qualification activities and work with MACOM’s BU product reliability teams, providing direction, guidance and support for all direct and indirect reports.
Identify opportunities for reliability improvement in current processes and products and work within the product commercialization process to realize these improvements in successive generations of designs.
Ensure sufficient equipment and people resources are in place and allocated appropriately to meet project schedules.
Influence semiconductor foundry partners and packaging suppliers to complete reliability tests and provide data in a consistent format that meets MACOM’s expectations.
Lead and grow a multidisciplinary reliability and failure analysis team.
Collaborate with R&D, NPI, Quality, Operations, and Customer Service to ensure robust product reliability and timely issue resolution.
Drive industry engagement through standards development (JEDEC, AEC) and represent the company in technical committees and conferences.
Support government contracts and ensure compliance with DoD/DoE requirements.
Provide technical leadership in customer interactions, including presentations and issue resolution.
Key Competencies & Skills required
Significant customer engagement experience on reliability related issues.
Experience influencing reliability and execution strategy in technology development and across B.U.’s.
Detailed knowledge of semiconductor device physics, reliability and associated failure modes and mechanisms.
Advanced knowledge of compound semiconductors, including processing, preferably with experience in GaAs, GaN, SiC, SiGe, InP, CMOS, Si PIN diodes, integrated systems (board/module level).
Understanding of standard qualification procedures such as Telcordia, MIL_STD, JEDEC, IPC, etc.
Knowledgeable in thermal/electrical/mechanical package reliability analysis and simulation.
Experience driving Design for Reliability (DFR) in a stage‑gate NPI process.
Skilled in the use of statistical software applications such as JMP or Minitab.
Leadership, assertiveness, teamwork, and excellent communication and presentation skills.
Job Requirements / Experience
Ph.D. or M.S. in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
20+ years of experience of increasing responsibility in areas of semiconductor reliability, failure analysis and quality, with emphasis on wide band‑gap technologies.
Proven success in building and managing large technical teams and multiple labs.
Expertise in reliability testing methodologies (HTOL, HTRB, TC, THB, ESD, etc.) and failure analysis techniques.
Strong knowledge of industry standards such as JEDEC, AEC, IEC, MIL.
Excellent communication and leadership skills; experience with structured problem‑solving (FMEA, 8D).
Active participation in industry consortia and standards development.
Six Sigma certified.
Experience communicating effectively at all levels, including with customers.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and focus cross‑functional teams.
