Zurich Insurance is seeking an experienced
Underwriting Specialist OR Executive Underwriter – Excess Casualty
to join our Construction team. Applicants may be based in Chicago, IL; Overland Park, KS; Pittsburgh, PA; Independence, OH; or Minneapolis, MN. The position supports a hybrid schedule with three days per week in the office/market.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain relationships with broker partners and customers in the Construction industry.
Leverage casualty underwriting acumen across risk assessment, exposure evaluation, and pricing to generate and maintain a profitable book of new and renewal business.
Work collaboratively across business units including claims, finance, risk engineering, actuary, and technical underwriting.
Use market‑facing, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to grow and develop relationships with preferred distribution partners in an assigned territory.
Underwrite and price a solid renewal book.
Identify and analyze new growth opportunities.
Ensure accounts are qualified, meet the organization’s appetite, and are balanced with sound business opportunity.
Conduct agent/broker/customer and on‑site calls with a planned purpose.
Oversee negotiations of terms & conditions and close deals.
Ensure cross‑sell within areas of responsibility to increase product density with Zurich customers.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 3+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
High School Diploma or equivalent and 6+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 1+ year of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree, 4+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area, and knowledge of line/s of business, legal and regulatory guidelines, time restraints for quotes, and Microsoft Office.
Executive Underwriter qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years in underwriting or market‑facing area; or 10+ years in claims or underwriting support area; or Certified Apprentice with associate degree and 3+ years in underwriting or market‑facing; or Certified Apprentice with associate degree, 8+ years in claims or underwriting support area, plus the knowledge items above.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree.
Salary & Benefits The combined salary range for this position is $75,000.00 – $165,000.00. The Underwriting Specialist range is $75,000.00 – $125,000.00 with a short‑term incentive bonus eligibility of 10%. The Executive Underwriter range is $98,500.00 – $165,000.00 with a short‑term incentive bonus eligibility of 15%. Additional rewards may include short‑term incentive bonuses and merit increases.

Remote Working: Hybrid.
