Our non-profit client is seeking an

Assistant Controller

to join their team on a temporary basis. This contract position is with a direct client of Aprio. Location:

Baltimore, MD (Can be 100% REMOTE or if local will be hybrid) Contract duration:

3-6 months + (Can extend and has full-time potential but not guaranteed) Hourly rate:

$60 - 75/hr Ideal start date:

January 5th, 2026 Summary: This is a

contract / temporary role

supporting the SVP/Controller and CFO, with broad ownership across accounting operations, nonprofit reporting, and private grant accounting. This role is for someone who brings strong nonprofit accounting fundamentals, hands‑on experience with

501(c)(3) private grants , and the ability to lead and develop an accounting team. Why It’s Worth Your Time

Support the SVP/Controller and CFO across accounting, reporting, budgeting, and audits Serve as a key accounting partner to the development team, coordinating, consulting on, and helping structure

private grant documentation Review contracts and transactions to determine and document proper accounting treatment under U.S. GAAP Lead month‑end and year‑end close, including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations Act as a primary audit contact and ensure timely, accurate audit schedules and responses Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls Lead process improvements across AP, AR, and GL to increase efficiency and reduce manual work Support compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements, including Form 990 Manage and develop the accounting team, including: Accounting Manager Senior Accountant (to be hired) Must-Haves

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance 6–8+ years of accounting or finance experience Strong nonprofit accounting background with direct experience managing private grants for 501(c)(3) organizations Proven experience overseeing AP, AR, and general ledger functions Experience supporting financial statement audits Prior people‑management experience with the ability to coach and develop staff Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting Nice to Have

1–2 years of public accounting experience Experience with SAGE Intacct, Bill.com, and/or ADP Advanced Excel and comfort with cloud‑based accounting systems Seniority level
