Assistant Conductor Position
The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) invites emerging conductors to apply for the position of Assistant Conductor. The successful applicant will work with Music Director & CEO Maestro Eduardo Marturet, observing rehearsals, acting as a potential cover conductor, and conducting the MISO’s Educational and Outreach activities whenever needed.
Position : 1‑year appointment with the option for a 2‑year extension.
Duties and Responsibilities
Cover rehearsals and concerts; be present at all rehearsals and assist with balances and other matters that may arise; provide the Music Director with written and verbal feedback on artistic matters such as repertory, balance, intonation, dynamics, and ensemble issues; be fully prepared to conduct in the event of emergencies; conduct performances as assigned; lead sectional rehearsals; assist the Music Director and Artistic Committee in preparing season programmes, rehearsal schedules, and other administrative and musical responsibilities. Additionally, attend all staff and production meetings, assist in communicating the Music Director’s needs, and work with the Production team to fulfil artistic requirements for productions (e.g., running supertitles or other visual elements that require score reading). Meet with the production team regarding stage set‑up preferences; work with the library team to review and confirm bowing, edits, and cuts. The Assistant Conductor is expected to be on time at all services and available for meetings with staff outside orchestral service times. Other duties as assigned.
The Assistant Conductor will also support educational programs by working with the Youth Symphony Orchestra in partnership with schools in South Florida.
Requirements
A Master’s degree in orchestral conducting or equivalent experience; minimum 3 years of equivalent experience.
Broad knowledge of orchestral repertoire, conducting techniques, orchestration and instrumentation, and a desire to conduct a variety of concerts (classical, pops, family, educational).
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Exceptional oral communication skills.
Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
Music Production knowledge is required.
Candidate must live in the Miami, Florida area.
Extensive conducting and administrative experience; ability to work under pressure, take directions and requests from many people while prioritising tasks; maintain a positive attitude and be a team player.
