Senior Structural Engineer
WSP USA seeks a highly energetic, self‑motivated, and goal‑oriented Senior Structural Engineer to support our Transportation Facilities Group in the New York, NY office.
Job Description The Transportation Facilities Group leads and designs projects that support local and regional growth initiatives through small and large transportation projects.
As a Senior Structural Engineer you will work under the supervision of a lead structural engineer and design projects including rail and bus stations, airports, and transportation hubs.
Your Impact
Lead engineering staff on various task assignments.
Develop structural design details, drawings and specifications, including calculations for new designs, rehabilitation, and renovation work.
Create drawings in REVIT, AutoCAD, MicroStation and Open Building.
Use structural software such as STAAD Pro, RAM Structural System, SAP2000, ETABS and SAFE.
Utilize Microsoft Excel and Mathcad Prime to develop structural calculations.
Lead field inspection teams for evaluation of structural systems of existing buildings.
Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and architects in the development of design contract documents.
Work within a paperless environment and remote working when required.
Collaborate with engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on federally, state, and regionally funded projects.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Typical Project Types
Transportation facilities including administration buildings, bus depots, shop and maintenance buildings, subway and rail stations, and substations.
Vent and utility buildings.
Aviation structures such as terminals, concourses, hangars, and ancillary support structures.
Resiliency related studies and design.
Parks and recreation centers.
Growth Opportunities
Develop into lead structural engineer level.
Assist in the development of proposals.
Work on design‑build and other high‑profile projects.
Direct interaction with clients.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering, or equivalent. Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering is highly preferred.
5 to 7 years of post‑education experience in the engineering discipline and prior structural design experience in transportation projects.
PE Licensed (NY/NJ) or capable of obtaining a New York State PE license within one year.
Knowledgeable in state and city building codes and industry standard specifications (IBC, ACI 318, AISC 360, etc.).
Prior experience working with construction documents.
Knowledgeable in STAAD Pro, SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, RAM Structural System, Mathcad, Excel or similar software.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and REVIT; knowledge of MicroStation and Open Building is a plus.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to express ideas professionally to engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
Effective self‑leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
Excellent communication and writing skills and organization.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Preferred Qualifications
Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering.
Experience working with transportation clients such as Amtrak, NYCT/MTA, NJ Transit.
Detailed experience related to transportation facility design and rehabilitation.
Knowledge of CSI‑format construction specifications.
