Position Overview Under general supervision, the employee will perform moderately skilled technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City of Houston’s Motorola P25 radio communications network, VPLS microwave network, subscriber radio devices, dispatch consoles, and fire station alerting equipment. This role includes:
Assisting in the development, installation, maintenance, and administration of the City’s Project 25 (P25) digital multisite, multi‑agency radio and IP‑based microwave system.
Providing rotating on‑call service work and programming voice and data radio communications equipment.
Collaborating with vendors on maintenance and repair of all radio users.
Repairing and maintaining Fire Alerting System (FSA) equipment.
Performing preventive maintenance at all radio tower sites, dispatch centers, and FAS stations.
Working Conditions The position is physically comfortable, requiring periodic walking, standing, and lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 lb). Work may involve outdoor installations, exposure to varying temperatures, and handheld equipment. The employee will also have rotating on‑call responsibilities.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS), or a closely related field, or equivalent experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
At least three (3) years of technology experience supporting IT infrastructure (networks, security, hardware). System‑specific technical certifications may substitute for one year of experience.
Valid Texas Driver’s License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2‑2).
Preferences
Veteran status, with qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties.
Working knowledge of Motorola P25 radio operations and FCC Rules & Regulations.
Knowledge of most recent radio programming, device troubleshooting, and decision‑making skills.
Experience operating technical and computer test equipment.
Microsoft Server/VSphere certifications.
Proficient in radio installation, repair of antennas, antenna lines, and DC power.
Completion of technical training in modern electronics or IP technology; experience with voltmeter, watt meter, and related instruments.
Certifications as a Certified Electronics Technician (C.E.T.) or General Communications Technician.
Selection / Skills Tests The Department may administer a skills assessment test. This is a safety‑impact position, therefore subject to a random drug test and, if the position is promotional, an assignment drug test. All new and rehires must pass a pre‑employment drug test and may be subject to a physical examination and verification of information.
Salary and Pay Grade Pay Grade: 22. Salary will be determined based on qualifications and comparable employee rates.
