Job Overview
Locum Consultant Cardiologist
– Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals Trust, Freeman Hospital. 12‑month post with primary focus on Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). 10 Programmed Activities per week, on‑call rota & clinical governance contributions.
Responsibilities
Lead on‑call PCI sessions for NSTEMI, STEMI and out‑of‑hospital cardiac arrest in the urgent cardiac catheter laboratory.
Provide specialist interventional cardiology opinion to referring hospitals across the region.
Offer expert clinical supervision of in‑patient cardiology patients and manage the day‑time on‑call PCI rota (≈1–11 shared with Freeman colleagues).
Participate in multidisciplinary audit, risk management, and clinical governance activities.
Contribute to the management of the Cardiology Clinic service and supervise trainees in the catheter lab.
Administrative & Leadership
Act as a key member of the Cardiothoracic Directorate, reporting to the Clinical Director.
Assist in the investigation of complaints and ensure timely reporting as per Trust policy.
Manage the Cardiac Catheter Lab sessions efficiently, supervising trainees and optimising resource utilisation.
Research & Teaching
Engage in research aligned with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) portfolio and support NHS clinical research initiatives.
Provide undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in cardiovascular medicine, including supervised clinical training and participation in the Foundations of Clinical Practice Cardiology teaching week.
Supervise post‑graduate trainees and contribute to the professional development of Foundation doctors, Core Medical Trainees, and Specialty Training Registrars.
Person Specification Essential
– Primary Medical Qualification, full GMC registration, entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within 6 months of appointment.
Desirable
– Higher research degree (MD or PhD), specialist skills training, evidence of complex PCI interest, leadership experience, proven management of clinical guidelines, audit projects, and teaching qualifications.
