Overview

The Director of Pharmacy oversees all pharmacy operations within a hospital setting, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant medication use while leading a high-performing pharmacy team. This leader partners with clinical and administrative stakeholders to support high-quality patient care and drive departmental performance.


Key Responsibilities

A successful Director of Pharmacy:

  • Directs departmental activities and resources to achieve pharmacy and organizational objectives.
  • Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, policies, and standards in line with clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations, including patient care services, information systems, service levels, and complaint resolution to meet quality and performance benchmarks.
  • Plans and manages staffing activities, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, performance evaluations, corrective actions, and ongoing staff development.
  • Prepares, monitors, and evaluates the departmental budget, ensuring operations remain within approved financial parameters.
  • Coordinates and directs internal and external audits, ensuring adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Creates and maintains a professional environment that supports engagement, collaboration, and continuous professional growth.
  • Integrates evidence-based practices and clinical guidelines into workflows, protocols, and pharmacy services.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of healthcare regulatory and compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA and pharmacy-related regulations).
  • Manages the work of others by planning, assigning, and reviewing work; ensuring quality standards; and overseeing training, coaching, and performance management for pharmacy staff.


Qualifications

  • Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in the applicable state.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy required.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree preferred.
  • Prior leadership or management experience in a hospital or health system pharmacy strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, regulatory standards, and quality and safety best practices.
