Mechanical Engineering Manager – Retail Business Line As an Engineering Manager, you serve as a hybrid discipline technical leader and people manager within the retail sector, maintaining a strong technical presence while also being responsible for team development, performance feedback and resource management.
Responsibilities
Lead, manage and mentor a team of discipline‑aligned engineers and designers within the assigned sector, fostering a collaborative high‑performance culture while developing and executing design projects.
Act as a hiring manager and career coach, attending interviews and providing performance feedback and guidance on skills progression and career development.
Participate in project scheduling meetings to ensure staff assignments are well‑matched to project scopes. Validate and monitor progress to ensure project objectives are being met.
Provide direct coaching and conduct individualized meetings to provide feedback and guide goal setting.
Assist sector leaders in establishing and implementing goals, policies, objectives and standards at the practice and/or sector level.
Collaborate cross‑functionally to manage project staff resources and discipline budgets.
Facilitate the process to improve project and design quality within your team, utilizing the quality review process and regular check‑ins.
Apply Henderson’s design guidelines, standards, policies and procedures and act as a technical resource to your team.
Oversee project coordination activities for your team such as managing emails, coordinating scope and schedule, coordinating design team, attending client meetings, ensuring project quality and responding to client questions.
Foster a client‑centric mindset and approach individually and within your team.
Proactively share information, updates, related ideas and suggestions for technical and process improvements with peers and leaders.
Direct and oversee the preparation of design documents, system layouts, detailed drawings, schematics and specifications from concept to completion.
Review shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.
Perform research and make recommendations regarding feasibility of systems or equipment, evaluating and recommending products for application.
Ensure that production of drawings, specifications, reports and analyses meets scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements.
Communicate with clients as needed for the development and coordination of requirements and scope of work, maintaining proactive communications throughout the project cycle.
Anticipate and answer questions from clients and architects, act as a resource and assist with answering questions.
Visit job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress.
Resolve conflicts involving owners, architects and contractors as needed.
Identify and seek to fill gaps in industry and/or discipline knowledge on a continuous basis.
Stay up to date on emerging technologies, industry trends and evolving codes and standards.
If applicable, perform to a higher standard of industry‑wide expectations associated with carrying a PE license and/or serving as an Engineer of Record (EOR).
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, fire protection, architectural engineering or related field preferred; High School Diploma or GED required.
Minimum 12 years of progressive, relevant engineering experience.
Expert knowledge and proficiency in engineering design, A&E industry, codes, design guides and standards for a broad range of practices, projects and/or program types.
Working knowledge of earned value, contracts and construction processes and methods.
Proficiency with Revit and Bluebeam Revu.Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and engineering design software applicable to your discipline.
Demonstrated history of building trust‑based relationships within teams and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
High emotional intelligence and ability to lead with empathy, clarity and constructive performance conversations.
Demonstrated interest in growing others through regular feedback, career guidance and skills‑based mentoring.
High technical aptitude: ability to learn, understand and utilize various systems and processes; comfortable training others.
Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with designers at all levels clearly and concisely.
Effective critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
Team‑oriented and willing to function in a highly collaborative environment, including leading less experienced designers.
Adaptable to changing work environments, priorities and organizational needs.
Ability to prioritize, execute and direct multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.

Trustworthy and capable of handling sensitive information.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineering (PE) license.
Additional certifications aligning with the technical field (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD, etc.).
Sustainability certifications (e.g., CDP, LEED, WELL, etc.).
Performance as an Engineer of Record (EOR).
