Position Information The full salary range for the Director, Systemwide Radiation Safety Program is $114,300 - $220,900 annually. Base salary offers are based on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure, certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Serves as the UC system-wide technical expert in the development and implementation of Radiation Safety programs. Represents EH&S regarding the field/discipline at meetings and conferences involving academic compliance committees, campus, system-wide, local government, state and federal levels of authority in matters related to the field of expertise. Decision‑making is based on established procedures and the integration/interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology; impact on other EH&S programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other EH&S programs, departments, segments of the organization, and/or organization‑wide.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as highest‑level organization subject‑matter expert in designated EH&S field

Oversee radiation safety, radiation‑producing machines, and laser safety programs. Provide technical consultation, direction, advice, and service throughout the University (Campuses and Health Systems) on radiation (ionizing and non‑ionizing) and laser safety issues. Facilitate emergency planning, preparedness, and response related to radiological and laser incidents. Participate in Emergency Response Team activities as required. Respond to campus emergencies; provide guidance and direction during campus laboratory emergencies.

Develop new and complex solutions applying advanced knowledge and best practices

Develops and works with campus stakeholders to promote programmatic compliance via audits, outreach, training and consultation. Prepares and presents at campus safety committee meetings, EH&S meetings and UC work group meetings. Participates in the EH&S leadership team.

Monitor and control the organization’s EH&S standards

Evaluate, recommend, and implement policies and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with EH&S requirements.

Serve as delegated representative of senior management to system‑wide, local government, state and federal levels of authority

Act as the UC Systemwide Radiation Safety Officer, with authority to act as interim RSO at UC locations with vacancies, in coordination with local leadership, UCOP, and regulatory bodies such as the RHB. Perform the preparation required for the license applications and amendments; perform maintenance and preparation of program documentation and protocols.

Commit the organization to a course of action

Inspect, investigate incidents and complaints, and recommend corrective action as needed.

Act as an authorized agent of an agency

Negotiate changes to legal interpretation of laws and regulations within field(s) of authority

Ensure implementation of quality control procedures according to all regulations in subject area

Prepare reports or other forms of scientific or technical documentation

Plan, organize and/or oversee work of professional EH&S staff

Maintain professional knowledge/expertise of existing and proposed changes in all EH&S areas

Develop recommendations for the Radiation Safety Committee based on current and pending regulations and industry best practices.

Requirements Educational Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training (required).

Advanced degree in a related area (preferred).

Experience Requirements

8–13 years of related experience (required).

Medical Radiation Safety Officer experience (preferred).

Certification Requirements

Professional certification (required).

Certified Health Physicist / Certified Medical Health Physicist (preferred).

Special Conditions

Must pass background check prior to appointment date (required).

Minimum Requirements

Expert knowledge/understanding of specific EH&S field and strong knowledge of all EH&S fields.

Expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines, and, as appropriate, recommend organization or systemwide policy.

Advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen and ability to deal with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment.

Advanced analytical skills and ability to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of high‑level and potentially complex projects within budget and time constraints.

Expert skill to effectively represent the organization to state and federal authorities, and community groups.

Expert skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff.

Expert skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
