Department Overview OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is a leading academic health center dedicated to pediatric care across Oregon, Southwest Washington, and beyond. The hospital provides state‑of‑the‑art treatments, research opportunities, and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve health outcomes for all children.

Function / Duties of Position The Cardiac Intensive Care Faculty position focuses on delivering high‑quality cardiac intensive care, fostering education, and supporting clinical teams. The faculty will collaborate with the CVICU Medical Director, intensivists, cardiologists, and surgeons to care for cardiac patients.

Clinical Responsibilities

CVICU service 12‑14 weeks per year with nights commensurate with FTE.

Clinical consultation 4‑8 hours per week.

Consultation: Provide daytime consultation for complex post‑operative patients and night and weekend (phone or in‑person) consultation for critically ill patients as needed. Monitor care and trajectory of all neonates and complex older children, providing consultation as needed.

Standing Huddles and Meetings

Meet regularly with PICU team members.

Participate in weekly PICU Case Conference.

Attend weekly Cardiac Case Conference.

Attend weekly Cardiac sign‑in conference.

Attend monthly PICU Morbidity and Mortality conference.

Attend quarterly and ad hoc ECMO Morbidity and Mortality conference.

Primary Objectives

Maintain and improve quality and operations of Cardiac Intensive Care.

Ensure consistency of care.

Enhance patient satisfaction.

Drive efficiencies including reduction of length of stay.

Means to Accomplish Objectives

Involvement in peri‑operative care, including surgical decisions impacted by postoperative considerations.

Surveying best practices and updating care maps for specific lesions.

Act as patient advocate in post‑operative care issues.

Provide continuity ("Primary Intensivist") for long‑term, complex patients.

Consultation for critically ill and/or complex cardiac patients.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities Professional Development This position will join an established and highly regarded practice with clinical, research, and educational responsibilities, and will hold an academic appointment. The Department of Pediatrics has a strong network of senior faculty who mentor and support promotion and tenure tracks of junior members. Educate future health professionals, scientists, engineers, and managers in top‑tier programs that prepare for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and contribution. Explore new basic, clinical, and applied research frontiers in health, biomedical, engineering, and information services. Translate discoveries into applications in health and commercial sectors. Lead and advocate for programs that improve health for all Oregonians, and extend OHSU’s education, research, and healthcare missions through community service, outreach, and partnerships.

Individual Performance Improvement Performance improvement is inherent to this position with the primary outcome being successful completion of the Doernbecher Quality goals. Process metrics demonstrate activities leading to appropriate outcome metrics.

Required Qualifications

Board certified in Pediatric Critical Care with an additional year of Cardiac Critical Care training or equivalent experience.

Active clinical practice and maintenance of skills through continuing medical education.

Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills.

Ability to motivate, teach, and facilitate individuals and groups.

Readiness to collaborate in an inter‑professional environment.

Positive professional relations with peers.

Ability to deal objectively and fairly with controversial issues with a professional, diplomatic, tactful communication style.

Proficiency to work both independently and in a team environment.

Ability to respectfully supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and students in pediatrics.
