The Opportunity:

Finatal is working with a sought-after venture capital investor looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the investment team. This is a full life-cycle investment role with fantastic exposure across a top-tier business. The successful candidate will have a PhD and prior experience investing in life sciences through venture capital.

Responsibilities:

Represent the fund across the the biotech and healthcare innovation ecosystem, act as a first point of contact for VCs, founders and academics. Underwrite new investment opportunities, in both funds and into startups. Support the MD in Investment Execution & Portfolio Optimization: Through fund commitments to top health care and biotech VCs, as well as investments in developing managers, to construct and develop a fund that meets both quantitative and qualitative fund objectives, as well as to monitor and continuously optimize commitments to ensure that objectives remain met. The Analyst will be Assessing the key risks, weaknesses, and strengths of a transaction and/or commitments Performing economic investment return and capital structure analysis Performing VC and/or manager diligence and financial strength analysis Portfolio Strategy Development: Through external and internal analyses, as well as ongoing research and information gathering, to develop an HCLS fund strategy that lays out the funds strategic objectives, target assets, portfolio construction and outcomes, as well as approach to achieving success of the fund strategy. Investment Deal Flow: Build and maintain a robust investment and deal pipeline, both through internally sourced managers as well as in collaboration with consultants and third parties. To also drive efficiency and effectiveness of the internal deal flow process, continuously improving existing SOP, tools, and ways of working. Network Growth: Regularly interact with and grow the full range of network players including, but not limited to, potential managers, direct targets, non-commercial players (e.g., Universities), other LPs in order to grow and strengthen the HCLS fund. Internal Collaboration: Contribute to the development of related businesses (e.g. healthcare) through thought partnership, network support, and other related areas of collaboration. To act as a source of information and analysis regarding global economic and sector-specific trends, providing the community with up-to-date recommendations on investment and sector-related topics.

Requirements:

In terms of the performance and personal competencies required for the position, we would highlight the following:

Scientific and Technological background: Post grad life science or healthcare qualification in an area relevant to the investment mandate of the HCLS fund (e.g Biochemistry). Familiarity with the integration of AI and ML into these sectors is a plus. Investment Expertise: Experience within a VC investment environment relevant to the mandate of the HCLS fund. This could be both from a General Partner, technology transfer office or from an allocator. The candidate should be able to demonstrate sourcing, diligence and investment execution skills. The candidate would be expected to take ownership of investment proposals from sourcing through to IC recommendations. Communication Skills: Externally, the candidate should be able to not only have the skills required to develop the network and relationships required to achieve the objectives of the LHS fund, as well as the ability to negotiate and navigate deals, but to also act as an ambassador for the brand. Internally, the candidate should be able to develop strong rapport with the shareholders, as well as senior leadership peers, to ensure clarity and effectiveness in defining the fund strategy, communicating developments, and collaborating across topics. Team Building Experience & Ability: The candidate should have shown an ability to work well in a team and contribute to team building initiatives

Skills & Experiences:

We would expect at least two years of experience in the finance or investment industry with recent experience in an adjacent investment or fund management role. Such adjacencies would include VC funds, TTOs as well as allocators such as SFOs, Endowments / Foundations or CVCs. Demonstratable knowledge and experience in the early stage HCLS venture or growth equity sector as an allocator. Experience with operational planning, sourcing, closing, and management of funds and related instruments. A postgrad qualification relevant to the investment mandate.
