Unit Coordinator | Family Unit | MGH Mass General Brigham

Job Summary Provide administrative support to unit-based and hospital‑wide clinicians and staff in an inpatient family unit. Serve as the liaison between patients, visitors, and clinicians, managing confidential information, coordinating patient flow, and ensuring seamless communication throughout the unit.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)

Organize priorities, complete tasks on time, and manage confidential patient information.

Partner with nursing staff to coordinate day‑to‑day patient flow, including admissions, discharges, and transfers.

Provide outstanding customer service during every patient and visitor interaction.

Assist with general administration of the floor or unit, clerical duties, and other assigned tasks.

Greet and interact with patients, families, visitors, and coworkers in person and via communication tools professionally.

Prioritize, organize, and manage information at the central nursing station and throughout the unit.

Schedule consultations, tests, procedures, and patient transport to other departments.

Enter accurate and timely information into the electronic medical record concerning admissions, discharges, and transfers.

Contact ancillary service departments to obtain equipment, services, and supplies; track status and location; use designated processes for identifying and facilitating repairs.

Assist the manager with payroll duties, scheduling of staff, or supervision of unit secretaries, as needed.

Comply with all policies and standards.

Qualifications Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)

Associate Degree (Preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

Unit Coordinator Certification – National Association of Health Unit Coordinators, Inc. (Preferred)

Experience

Administrative support experience 2–3 years (Required)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proficiency with office procedures and equipment (filing, copying, scanning, printing, faxing).

Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Proofreading and editing written documents.

Phone system usage.

Time‑management for self and others.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Standard office equipment usage.

Familiarity with medical terminology.

Pay Range: $18.22 – $26.06 per hour

Grade: 3
