The Business Development team at JT THORPE is the driving force behind bringing new projects into the hands of our project teams. As the Director of Business Development – Key Accounts for our Fireproofing Shop, you will serve as the vital link between customers, new opportunities, and our internal operations.
In this role, you will be responsible for building and strengthening client relationships, identifying upcoming projects, and staying current on industry trends and competitors.
You will connect customer needs with well‑prepared estimates and proposals, ensuring alignment with both client expectations and company standards. Success in this position requires a strong understanding of our business processes and technical expertise in our industry.
We prioritize our customers – steel fabricators, owners, large EPC firms, and GCs in these industries. Alongside Senior Management, you will be responsible for organizing and executing a focused sales plan to best reach these customers.
Utilizing a CRM tool to capture, track, and maintain customer contact is key.
What you’ll be doing
Manage annual sales budget, prioritizing sales strategy through conference attendance and networking with potential customers.
Create presentations via PowerPoint or equivalent and deliver them to a spectrum of audiences, from internal stakeholders to project management team members and customer contacts.
Organize, update, and maintain a focused sales plan and customer contact list; execute your own schedule to optimize time and maintain persistent contact with specific customers and track potential project bid milestones.
Provide weekly and monthly updates to JT THORPE senior leadership.
Travel to meet, build, and maintain customer relationships.
Travel to conferences specific to our market and network with potential customers.
Set up project management for success by providing accurate and reliable information regarding projects and customers.
Drive growth and increase market share for JT THORPE.
Work diligently to learn JT THORPE’s mission and strategies, as well as industry standards, applications, materials and equipment.
Project proposal development
Travel as needed to job bid walks, bid review meetings and business development meetings throughout the U.S.
Work with management to secure and develop major accounts and projects with steel fabricators, owners, EPCs & GCs.
Drive the estimating and proposal writing to ensure JT THORPE produces the most cost‑effective and professional proposal every time.
Clearly communicate plans and results to a spectrum of audiences, from internal stakeholders to project management team members and customer contacts.
What you’ll need
7+ years’ experience in sales or marketing within industrial construction markets.
Experience with supporting estimating/proposal writing and presentations for large industrial projects.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, communications, or marketing is preferred.
Experience with fireproofing or coatings is preferred but not required.
Strong self‑motivation and self‑organization. Efficient time management is essential.
“Driver” personality – biased toward action and continuously pushing for excellence.
Ability to analyze and track projects from origination to award.
Grittiness – willingness to roll up sleeves and tackle hands‑on tasks, persevering when others fall away.
Excellent planning, communication, and analytics skills; ability to pivot when needed to pursue the best fit projects for JT THORPE.
