Therapeutic Recreation Director Position Summary The Therapeutic Recreation Director is responsible for developing, implementing, supervising, and continuously evaluating resident activity and recreation programs to enhance overall quality of life. This role completes the activity component of comprehensive assessments, contributes to individualized care plans, and designs programs that support residents’ physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being in alignment with the Resident’s Bill of Rights and the facility’s QAPI program.
The Director plans and delivers person-centered group, individual, in-room, and offsite activities; maintains activity calendars; encourages resident engagement; and documents participation, preferences, and progress. They collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to integrate recreation into the overall care plan and provide supportive, resident-centered experiences. The position also oversees, trains, and motivates TR staff and volunteers, or performs TR Aide duties when no support staff are available, while managing the department budget, ensuring compliance with safety and infection control standards, and maintaining a positive, inclusive work environment.
Qualifications
Must be a licensed or registered Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Activities Professional, qualified occupational therapist/assistant, or have relevant healthcare activity program experience or state‑approved training.
Preferred Background: Experience in healthcare settings such as skilled nursing facilities or assisted living is desirable.
Core Skills: Strong multitasking, adaptability, resilience, and ability to work effectively in fast-paced and evolving environments.
Interpersonal Strengths: High emotional intelligence, active listening, clear communication, and the ability to build trust with diverse populations including residents, staff, and families.
