About the Department The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) provides infrastructure to advance interdisciplinary research and training in health and social sciences at the University of Chicago. It attracts participation from across the university—including the Biological Sciences Division, Institute for Translational Medicine, Social Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Division, Booth School of Business, Harris School of Public Policy, Law School, Crown School of Social Work, NORC, and Argonne National Labs. The Center supports innovation, collaboration, and excellence in research, scholarship, and training. With 140 faculty associates, CHeSS serves as an incubator of ideas, sponsors seminars and workshops, invites national scholars, supports grant writing, coordinates new research initiatives, manages training programs, and provides expert research methods consultation.
Job Summary The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) seeks an entry‑level Research Analyst to join our Methods Core team. The analyst will use statistical programming in Stata, R, and SAS to manage, analyze, and manipulate large, complex datasets. Working under senior staff, the analyst will support research related to healthcare economics, health services, and health‑delivery science. Projects involve the Merative MarketScan® Research Databases and will span study design to manuscript preparation. Additional responsibilities include supporting educational activities, preparing training materials, serving as a teaching assistant, and performing administrative tasks such as financial transactions, facilities management, and IT liaison work.
Responsibilities
Conduct quantitative analyses for funded health services research projects (observational studies, randomized controlled trials).
Work with diverse data sources—claims data, surveys, administrative records, electronic health records—to evaluate health outcomes and identify cost‑reduction opportunities.
Prepare statistical analyses, summary measures, and detailed reports for teams, funders, and broader audiences.
Develop impactful data visualizations to communicate key findings and insights clearly.
Participate in training and educational activities, including preparing teaching materials and serving as a teaching assistant for the Summer Program in Outcomes Research Training.
Support administrative tasks for CHeSS, such as liaison work with other units (EVS, plant, IT services), managing space and equipment, triaging emails, handling day‑to‑day financial transactions, and assisting with event planning.
Maintain technical and administrative support for research projects, including recruiting and scheduling subjects, developing protocols, creating data collection tools, building databases, and providing general administrative support.
Perform related work as needed.
Education & Minimum Qualifications
College or university degree in a related field.
Work Experience
Less than 2 years of work experience in a related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
Experience with research, data modeling, data analysis, and programming.
Experience working with large longitudinal health‑related datasets.
Knowledge of Stata.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Excellent statistical and programming skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Motivation to explore and apply new technologies and methods to complex problems.
Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize competing objectives, and identify opportunities to work more efficiently.
