Invitae, part of Labcorp, is looking for a Lab Automation Support Engineer to join its highly‑automated diagnostic laboratory in San Francisco. This role provides first‑tier troubleshooting support for all hardware and software, ensuring smooth lab operations through prompt response to error alerts, work requests, and other assistance.
Schedule:
Sunday – Thursday 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM PT. Training: Monday – Friday 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM during the first 90 days.

Responsibilities
Provide automation support to lab staff and production systems
Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain robotic liquid handling systems and other automation instrumentation
Interact with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Assess work requests from lab staff, create detailed tickets, and expedite to the proper teams as needed
Collaborate with clinical lab personnel and functional groups to investigate process failures and identify root cause
Identify issues that may adversely affect the quality of test results and report to relevant representatives for prompt resolution
Qualify lab equipment for production use
Maintain an inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies
Assist with the implementation of new automated processes
Document and record activities related to support and maintenance
Keep lab staff informed about the status of support efforts
Train new team members and provide coaching/mentoring as needed
Create and revise SOPs and training resources
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related life science field
At least 2 years of relevant experience in a high‑complexity laboratory environment (operator, lab technician, lab assistant, or lab equipment support role)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a high‑sample‑volume FDA, ISO 13485/15189, GMP, GLP, and/or CAP/CLIA‑certified laboratory
Hands‑on experience with industry‑standard laboratory equipment (custom integrated workcells, liquid‑handling systems such as Hamilton STAR/STARlet, Agilent Bravo, Dynamic Devices Lynx), scheduling software (Overlord, GBG), and ancillary equipment (centrifuges, cold storage, etc.)
Field service engineering experience with relevant manufacturers (Agilent, Hamilton, Dynamic Devices, Tecan, Illumina, Unchained Labs)
Basic programming skills; ability to understand programming logic and pseudo‑code
Familiarity with NGS technologies
Full‑time availability with flexibility to support early or evening shifts, including weekends
Skills and Competencies
Intermediate understanding of laboratory instrument operation and hardware integration
Proficiency in documenting procedures, test results, and troubleshooting steps
Independent technical troubleshooting and escalation for complex issues
Software and integrated system troubleshooting (LIMS, scheduling platforms, etc.)
Analytical thinking, critical problem‑solving, and innovative solution development
Basic experimental design for root‑cause analysis
Cross‑functional collaboration with automation, assay development, quality, and production teams
Ability to work under pressure with time and resource constraints
Strong communication skills using technical language
Working Conditions
Fast‑paced NGS laboratory with potentially heavy equipment (50 + lb)
Some travel for vendor training (Reno, Boston, Bay Area)
Pay Range $34.68 – $44.76
per hour, plus a 2nd‑shift differential.
