Director of Product - Course Experience
At AoPS, we are world leaders in teaching advanced mathematics. We train many of the most elite mathematicians in the world, including all members of the US International Math Olympiad team. Despite this impact, AoPS remains relatively unknown to the broader public.
AoPS is unique because it is vertically integrated: it develops its own curriculum, runs its own physical learning centers, employs teachers, and has a robust and capable product, design, and engineering team. Today, our curriculum and academic programs are absolutely world‑class, but our digital experiences are dated. Your job will be to reimagine our digital learning experience, and to push the upper bounds of great teaching and learning.
We are hiring for a Director of Product - Course Experience who will report to the Chief Product Officer and own the digital learning experiences across all our course offerings—from classroom technology for in‑person and online courses to self‑paced learning platforms and homework systems.
Responsibilities
Develop new live classroom products used by teachers and students for all AoPS in‑person and online course offerings.
Develop new self‑paced and asynchronous learning experiences that leverage AoPS’s world‑class curriculum and recent advances in AI.
Create radically new learning experiences for pushing the ceiling of great math education, including designs that combine hardware, software, and new AI tools.
Manage a team of product managers working on different components of the learning journey.
Foster a "demo culture" where design ideas are quickly prototyped and tested with real students and teachers.
Create a culture of storytelling, a deep understanding of customer journeys, and attention to the details of a quality user experience.
Collaborate with engineering, design, curriculum development, course delivery, customer service and marketing teams to ensure cohesive and high‑quality execution.
Qualifications
Hold a high bar for great products, have strong opinions, and can evangelize a great learning experience across the company.
Have well‑developed opinions about pedagogy and learning experiences.
Be excited for the future of AI tutoring, but also know that the best tutors sometimes just wait patiently and say nothing.
Have experience in high‑velocity product teams, and can rally teams to fast‑paced and high‑quality execution.
Be willing to throw away good ideas in pursuit of great ones.
Enjoy spending time with students and teachers in classrooms and are excited to make things intuitive and obvious for them.
Be curious about mathematics and are eager to dive into what makes a truly great learning experience.
Perks & Benefits This is a full‑time position based at our headquarters in San Diego, CA. Base salary for this role is 160k‑190k plus a variable year‑end bonus.
Impact: Opportunity to help more students discover the joy of mathematical problem‑solving.
Culture: Work in an environment of world‑class engineers and designers, who love creating interesting problems…and solving them.
Creativity: Freedom to experiment, test, and refine products that make both learning and teaching mathematics more engaging.
Benefits: Competitive compensation package including medical, dental, and vision plans.
Future Planning: 401(k) with company match.
Ease of Transition: Relocation assistance available if currently located outside of San Diego.
Additional Information Background Check: Employment is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the US. No sponsorship offered (including STEM‑OPT and H‑1B).
About AoPS Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) is on a mission to discover, inspire, and train the great problem solvers of the next generation. Since 2003, we have trained hundreds of thousands of the country’s top students, including nearly all the members of the US International Math Olympiad team, through our online school, in‑person academies, textbooks, and online learning systems. While our primary focus has been math for most of our history, we’ve expanded our unique problem‑solving curriculum into more subjects, such as language arts, science, and computer science.
