Subsense Inc.
About Subsense
Subsense is a deep-tech company developing the world’s first non-surgical, bidirectional brain‑computer interface powered by plasmonic and magnetoelectric nanoparticles. Our mission is to unlock direct communication between the human brain and AI – starting with medical applications such as stroke recovery and moving toward cognitive enhancement for healthy users. Headquartered in Palo Alto, Subsense brings together leading scientists and engineers to redefine the future of human‑machine interaction.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Scientific Software Engineer I to work closely with a senior technical lead on data analysis, signal processing, and scientific software development. This role is ideal for someone with a strong quantitative background who enjoys working with real, messy data and contributing to production‑adjacent Python codebases. You will be expected to work semi‑autonomously on well‑scoped problems, with regular guidance, code review, and technical mentorship.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze biological time‑series and imaging data, including artifact identification, filtering, unsupervised learning, and signal extraction
Maintain and contribute to Python‑based analysis pipelines and tooling, including for visualization
Refactor exploratory analysis code (e.g., Jupyter notebooks) into reusable, well‑structured modules within a shared codebase
Collaborate closely with a senior IC to iteratively improve both analyses and software quality
The balance between analysis, modeling, and infrastructure/software work may shift over time depending on project needs and your strengths
What You'll Bring (Must‑Have Experience)
Analyze biological time‑series and imaging data, including artifact identification, filtering, unsupervised learning, and signal extraction

Good To Have Experience
Background in neuroscience or biological data analysis
Experience with signal processing and time‑series data (e.g., filtering, spectral analysis)
Familiarity with libraries and techniques for efficiently handling large datasets (e.g., memory‑mapping, multi‑processing, distributed computing, etc.)
Familiarity with ML libraries (e.g., PyTorch, Sci‑Kit Learn)
Experience building analysis or visualization tools beyond notebooks
Experience in fast‑paced environments
What This Role Is (And Isn’t)
This is not a pure software engineering role, nor is it a pure research role
Skewing more in one direction or another is welcome, provided the candidate is comfortable learning new skills
You don't need to be an expert in all areas on day one
You do need to be:
Comfortable learning across domains and writing efficient, maintainable Python with guidance
Curious, rigorous, and scientifically minded
Comfortable with fast‑paced, early‑stage startup workflows and wearing different hats as needed
Subsense is an equal‑opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
