Lead Automation Engineer – Target
Location:
Minneapolis–St. Paul, MN – Hybrid/Flex work arrangement
Pay Range:
$113,000.00 – $203,000.00
About the Role The Lead Automation Engineer works on the Innovation team to scope, test, and implement world‑class supply chain automation projects that enhance the Target guest experience by increasing speed and accuracy of goods processing through the internal supply chain.
Responsibilities
Ensure safety in design for all operations projects.
Drive, influence and effectively communicate automation strategies for process paths or technology capabilities.
Evaluate technologies through creation of cafeteria plans.
Create, foster and maintain connections with key vendors and external industry stakeholders.
Design engineering concepts and systems.
Create factory acceptance test plans and site acceptance test plans following Target testing strategy and execute them.
Lead innovation proof of concepts and pilots to evaluate new technologies.
Partner with cross‑functional teams to plan activation of engineering systems and support engineering initiatives for process improvements.
Generate accurate capital and expense cost estimates associated with concept designs.
Layout concepts through AutoCAD software.
Communicate issues internally and hold all parties accountable as required.
Develop technical request for proposal (RFP), tabulate and qualify proposals, and make technical recommendations on award.
Collaborate effectively across all internal and external stakeholders including vendors, internal engineering team, operations and facility teams.
Innovate and think outside the box.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
7+ years of combined experience in material handling, automation, manufacturing, supply chain and/or distribution and logistics industries, or 5+ years combined experience plus an advanced degree in engineering.
Proven project management experience implementing multi‑million dollar, complex capital equipment and systems.
Experience in machine building design, station design and/or manufacturing lines.
Experience in concept development, prototype testing, engineering design and managing collaboration with automation suppliers.
Experience in coordinating and executing proof of concept automation solutions.
Broad experience programming, troubleshooting automation systems (material handling equipment, robotics, vision systems).
5+ years of experience in safety systems, safety standards, risk assessment and applying safety to automated solutions.
Extensive experience testing and validating automation equipment.
Multi‑year experience with project management strategies required for complex and dynamic projects with very short lead times.
Demonstrates analytical and organizational skills with ability to manage several complex projects at the same time with high degrees of variation and uncertainty.
Capable of working with little or no supervision and providing subject‑matter expertise to recommend solutions with significant business impact.
Can communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.
Must demonstrate judgment and decision‑making skills under conditions of uncertainty with significant lack of data.
Frequently provides updates and direction to leadership as a coordinator of complex cross‑functional projects and programs.
Proficiency with standard project planning software applications.
Ability to travel up to 25% (varies by project phase).
Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement requires presence onsite at Target HQ when needed and virtual work otherwise; work duties cannot be performed outside the country of the primary work location unless prescribed by Target.
