About the Role The Lead Automation Engineer on the Innovation team scopes, tests, and implements world‑class supply‑chain automation projects that increase the speed and accuracy of goods processing. Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Automation, the engineer partners with internal teams and external suppliers to design concepts, evaluate technologies, support system activation, validate and test solutions, and mentor junior engineers.
Responsibilities
Ensure safety in design for all operations projects.
Drive, influence, and communicate automation strategies for process paths or technology capabilities.
Evaluate technologies through comprehensive plans.
Build and maintain relationships with key vendors and industry stakeholders.
Design engineering concepts and systems.
Develop and execute Factory Acceptance Test Plans and Site Acceptance Test Plans following Target's testing strategy.
Lead proof‑of‑concept pilots to evaluate new technologies.
Partner with cross‑functional teams to activate engineering systems and support process improvements.
Generate accurate capital and expense cost estimates for concept designs.
Create layouts using AutoCAD.
Communicate issues internally and hold parties accountable.
Develop technical RFPs, tabulate and qualify proposals, and provide technical recommendations.
Collaborate effectively across internal and external stakeholders.
Innovate and think outside the box.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
7+ years combined experience in material handling, automation, manufacturing, supply‑chain, or logistics; or 5+ years plus an advanced engineering degree.
Proven project‑management experience delivering multi‑million dollar, complex capital equipment and systems.
Experience in machine‑building design, station design, and/or manufacturing lines.
Experience in concept development, prototype testing, engineering design, and collaboration with automation suppliers.
Experience coordinating and executing proof‑of‑concept automation solutions.
Broad experience programming, troubleshooting automation systems (material handling equipment, robotics, vision systems, etc.).
5+ years experience in safety systems, safety standards, risk assessment, and applying safety to automated solutions.
Extensive experience testing and validating automation equipment.
Multi‑year experience with project‑management strategies required for complex, dynamic projects with short lead times.
Analytical and organizational skills to manage several complex projects concurrently with high uncertainty.
Ability to work with little or no supervision and provide subject‑matter expertise for high‑impact solutions.
Strong communication skills across all levels and external stakeholders.
Judgment and decision‑making skills under uncertainty and data scarcity.
Frequent updates and direction influence to leadership for complex cross‑functional programs.
Proficiency with standard project‑planning software applications.
Ability to travel up to 25% (varies by project phase).
Hybrid/Flex work arrangement: onsite at Target HQ MN and virtual as required.
