Under the direction of the COMPASS Program Manager, the Family Partner performs complex human services support work as part of the Coordinated Specialty Care - Early Onset (COMPASS) program. The role provides services to families receiving COMPASS services, helping with referrals, advocacy, empowerment, and informal skills training. The Family Partner is a formal member of the team, serving the family to engage, participate, and make informed decisions. They connect the community and agencies, ensuring each family's needs are addressed. Works under moderate supervision.

Education, Training, and Experience

High School Diploma or GED (required).

Begin process of becoming a Certified Family Partner within 3 months of employment start.

At least one year of experience raising a child with special needs.

Experience navigating the Mental Health System, Special Education, or Juvenile Justice System.

Good knowledge base of mental illness diagnoses and behavior disorders.

Ability to collaborate closely with family members and professionals to develop and implement individualized plans of care.

Flexible schedule to meet families at convenient times.

Licensure, Registration, and Other Qualifications

All job‑specific training completed within 30 days of hire.

Valid Texas driver's license, auto liability insurance, and acceptable driving record per Center insurance requirements.

Obtain Certified Family Partner certification within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of needs, problems, community environments for persons with disabilities; government service delivery systems; case management systems; and community welfare resources.

Skill in conducting individual needs assessments and using computers and relevant software.

Ability to negotiate services, communicate effectively, and train others.

Understanding and practice of Trauma Informed Care principles.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, with assertiveness when needed with other agencies.

Essential Duties

Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating professional and caring attitudes toward clients and family members.

Teach problem‑solving techniques with individuals and groups within the COMPASS Program.

Maintain a productivity goal of meeting with at least 50% of individuals enrolled in the program per quarter.

Maintain accurate and concise documentation of contacts with families, team members, and providers, including follow‑up on referrals. Enter all documentation per Center policy.

Research sources and educate families about community resources that meet their specific needs; assist parents/caregivers in accessing social supports.

Teach families/caregivers effective advocacy skills.

Serve as peer mentor to parents/caregivers and provide informal support.

Facilitate caregivers’ ability to work collaboratively with professionals in the community.

Schedule and oversee Family Support Groups to reinforce family coping skills and unity.

Maintain acceptable driving record required for DCMHMR insurance. Perform additional duties as directed.

Deliver services that reflect the unique cultural values and practices of the family.

Be present and on duty with no excessive time off; use vacation, compensatory, or personal leave only with advance authorization.

Demonstrate safe working habits and comply with all facility safety standards.

Provide emergency intervention per Department of Human Services and Center policies; perform CPR and first aid until professional medical aid arrives.
