Position Overview: The Tax Manager, Real Estate will join our thriving Real Estate Tax practice group, working alongside a talented team of tax professionals who are passionate about delivering exceptional value to clients. This hybrid role offers the flexibility to manage your own schedule, significant career advancement opportunities with direct partner mentorship, and clear partner-track potential for those who desire it. The role we have open is a Tax Manager level opening in the Real Estate practice. The Real Estate practice serves closely held businesses, real estate developers, high-net-worth investors, community associations (condominiums, cooperatives, and HOAs), and specialty real estate programs. Relocation is a consideration.
Responsibilities: Advise real estate clients throughout every phase of investment and development, manage multiple tax engagements while driving new initiatives, and serve as the primary tax contact for assigned clients.
Tax Compliance & Planning: Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for various real estate entities and high-net-worth individuals. Research and interpret tax laws for real estate transactions. Develop and implement advanced tax planning strategies for acquisitions, dispositions, 1031 exchanges, cost segregation, and refinancing. Identify ways to minimize tax liabilities and maximize client returns. Offer technical expertise on complex transactions and investment structures. Advise optimal entity structures for real estate holdings.
Real Estate Focus: Prepare and review tax compliance for community associations Advise on real estate tax programs and incentives Handle partnership allocations, capital accounts, and distribution waterfalls Manage multi-state tax filings for diverse property portfolios Counsel on professional status, passive loss rules, and tax strategies Collaborate with specialists on property and integrated tax matters
Team Leadership & Development : Oversee and manage daily client engagements and tax return workflows, ensuring quality and efficiency. Supervise, train, and mentor team members to build a collaborative environment and support professional growth. Coordinate project planning and client communications with senior leadership while reviewing staff work and ensuring high standards. Engage in business development, attending industry events, expanding services for existing clients, building strong professional relationships, and participating in associations and thought leadership initiatives, the firm strengthens it's reputation and drives on going growth in the real estate sector.
Required Qualifications Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field CPA license is highly desired (or active pursuit with completion expected within 12 months) Masters degree in Taxation (MST) or Juris Doctorate (JD) highly desired. 68 years of public accounting experience focused in tax, including 35 years specializing in real estate tax. Leadership experience (minimum 3 years) in supervising or managing teams is required. Flow-through entity taxation covering partnerships, S corporations, and LLC is essential, alongside advanced expertise in partnership allocation methodologies (Sections 704(b), 704(c), and Section 754 elections), REIT compliance, like-kind exchanges (1031), Opportunity Zone investments, multi-state tax compliance, transfer taxes, cost segregation and bonus depreciation, and passive activity loss rules. Familiarity with community association taxation (condos, co-ops, HOAs) and specialized real estate tax incentive programs is highly valued. Affordable housing tax credit knowledge is a plus. Proficiency with leading tax software platforms (ProSystem fx, CCH Axcess, GoSystems, or similar) Experience with small and mid-sized Tax firms is required
