Forensic Toxicologist (2456) - Office of the City Administrator (Eligible List ID #161540) Full‑time position. Compensation yearly USD 133,692 – USD 162,526. Position‑based test following CSC Rule 111A. Apply by January 6, 2026.

About the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is responsible for the medicolegal investigation and the certification of the cause of death for sudden, unexpected, or violent deaths, including accidental drug overdoses, suicides, or homicides. OCME provides impartial forensic services to the community and the justice system and informs public health initiatives.

Responsibilities

Interact with department divisions, medical, investigative, administrative staff, external police agencies, state and federal entities, and other city agencies.

Receive evidence, accession specimens, maintain chain of custody, and release forensic evidence per policy.

Evaluate evidence quality and quantity for scientific testing; perform qualitative and quantitative evaluations of forensic specimens using GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, LC/TOF‑MS, immunoassays, etc.

Perform forensic alcohol determinations and quantitations per Title 17, California Administrative Code.

Participate in proficiency tests; attend training and research technical literature to enhance methods.

Record data, compile case folders, and prepare legal reports of analyses.

Maintain laboratory equipment, inventory, service records, and perform quality‑control procedures.

Authorize, report, and interpret forensic alcohol determinations and other assays; review casework for closure; issue laboratory reports.

Testify in court on laboratory findings and methodology.

Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a life science or physical science with at least 16 semester hours in chemistry, statistics, and two analytical/interpretive courses in forensic toxicology, pharmacology, or chemistry.

License and Certification:

Valid California Driver License; eligibility for certification by the State of California Department of Public Health as a Title 17 Forensic Alcohol Analyst within five years of hire.

Supplemental:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, maintain concentration, handle biohazards and toxic chemicals, and comply with departmental safety policies.
