Forensic Toxicologist (2456) – Office of the City Administrator (Eligible List ID #161540)
City and County of San Francisco invites applications for the Forensic Toxicologist position within the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The successful candidate will perform laboratory analyses, maintain evidence integrity, and provide expert testimony in support of the city’s forensic services.
Job Description Under the guidance of a Forensic Toxicologist Supervisor and the Chief Forensic Toxicologist/Forensic Laboratory Director, the Forensic Toxicologist plays a critical role as a scientifically trained professional in forensic analysis.
Responsibilities
Interact with other departmental divisions, medical, investigative, and administrative stakeholders, and external agency partners.
Receive and accession evidence for drug and chemical analysis; maintain chain of custody and release evidence per policy.
Evaluate evidence to determine suitability for testing; perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological specimens, including blood, urine, tissue, and vitreous fluid.
Identify, confirm, and quantify drugs and chemicals using GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, LC/TOF‑MS, immunoassays, and other laboratory procedures according to Standard Operating Procedures.
Conduct forensic alcohol determinations and quantitations in compliance with Title 17, California Administrative Code.
Participate in proficiency testing, attend training courses, and review scientific literature to remain current with best practices.
Record data, compile case folders, and prepare legal reports documenting all analyses.
Set up laboratory apparatus, maintain equipment, manage inventory, and perform quality‑control procedures.
Review, authorize, and interpret forensic findings, and sign laboratory reports.
Testify in court to explain laboratory findings and methodologies, and advise attorneys, investigators, and other professionals.
Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a life or physical science with 16 semester hours in general and organic chemistry, a statistics course, and two analytical or interpretive courses in forensic toxicology, pharmacology, or chemistry.
License and Certification:
Valid California driver license; and eligibility for certification as a Title 17 Forensic Alcohol Analyst within five years of hire.
Supplemental Information:
Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, maintain focus during long analyses, and work in environments with biohazard and toxic chemical exposure. Must comply with blood‑borne pathogen, biohazard, and chemical safety protocols.
