Job Summary The Staff Accountant is a key member of the San Francisco Symphony’s Accounting Team and reports directly to the Assistant Controller. This position plays a critical role in the monthly close of the financial statements as well as annual audits. The Staff Accountant will work closely with the Controller, Accounting Manager, and other members of the Accounting and Finance team. The successful candidate demonstrates strong accounting skills, communicates effectively with a variety of audiences, excels at meeting deadlines, and pays close attention to details. The ability to multi‑task is also critical.

Responsibilities

Prepares journal entries and monthly reconciliations for assigned accounts.

Assists with reconciliation of clearing accounts.

Assists with preparation of the daily deposit log and provides coding for miscellaneous cash receipts.

Reconciles payroll accounts.

Monitors all payroll deductions and prepares weekly reconciliations to ensure employee withholdings are remitted properly.

Manages accounts receivable, including preparation of invoices and monitoring collections.

Serves as a backup for accounts payable.

Assists with preparation of the monthly financial close packet.

Prepares schedules and reconciliations for the annual financial audit as assigned.

Works closely with the Financial Planning & Analysis team to ensure accuracy of accounting records.

Responds to inquiries from SFS staff as to recorded transactions.

Works with the Controller and Assistant Controller to implement new accounting standards.

Assists the Senior Accountant with reclass entries.

Assists with various projects as assigned by the Controller and Assistant Controller.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is strongly required. Licensed Certified Public Accountant preferred but not required; equivalent experience also considered.

3‑5 years of experience with general ledger accounting.

Accounting experience in a non‑profit organization preferred.

Familiarity with accounting software systems.

Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word.

Committed to working with strict deadlines and dedicated to handling multiple assignments simultaneously.

Attention to detail, willingness to learn, and team‑oriented.

Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and analytical skills.
