A Brief Overview The Surgical Technologist is a member of the surgical team and provides patient care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. The role involves preparing appropriate instrumentation and materials, passing instruments to the surgeon, overseeing room turnover, and may serve as a resource or preceptor in assigned service when requested.

What You Will Do
Act as a preceptor to the team and provide guidance to lower level STs as needed.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment in a timely manner.
Apply previous experience and knowledge when dealing with new surgical procedures.
Communicate in a positive, clear, and concise manner to all members of the surgical team.
Correctly select and utilize sterilization methods appropriate to specific instruments, supplies, or equipment.
Provide appropriate care based on the needs of the individual, taking into consideration age, culture, and developmental issues.
Handle specimens and medications using correct technique and according to departmental policy and procedure.
Maintain sterile technique as well as sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment.
Monitor and communicate to surgical team members any breaks in technique or unsafe patient situations.
Perform the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments, and sponges with the circulating nurse before, during, and after closure of the incision.
Prepare the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case, ensuring all materials are available, in working order, and that own skill in using equipment is verified.
Utilize knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology to anticipate and respond to the needs of surgeons by requesting instruments and supplies based on procedure and case progress.
Education Qualifications
Completion of a formal, structured program for Surgical Technology.
Experience Qualifications
Two or more years of experience as a surgical technologist.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Provide comfort and support for perioperative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient care and privacy.
Apply sound judgment and make informed decisions.
Foster effective working relationships and build consensus.
Identify issues and recommend solutions.
Communicate effectively in a variety of formats at a level appropriate for the job.
Assist the team in meeting standard work requirements for all patient care in the operating room.
Possess advanced knowledge related to OR emergencies.
Understand normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology.
Understand surgical procedures to anticipate needs and requests from surgeons.
Know the principles of sterile technique during surgical procedures and actively monitor for breaches.
Know computer systems and software used in the functional area.
Adhere to Stanford Healthcare policies and practices that meet all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Know general safety procedures and be able to elevate any violations of safety procedures appropriately.
Takes accountability for own clinical and professional growth based on continuing education, evaluations, and feedback.
Licenses and Certifications
BLS – Basic Life Support.
CST – Certified Surgical Technician (preferred).
