Principal, Data Scientist – Causal Inference & Experimentation Walmart is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to lead causal inference, experimentation, and decision science across product, business, and executive leadership within its rapidly growing Walmart Business omnichannel platform.

Base Pay Range : $110,000.00/yr – $220,000.00/yr

What You’ll Do

Define and lead the causal measurement strategy for major product, pricing, and operational initiatives.

Design and evaluate large‑scale experimentation frameworks, including A/B testing, sequential experimentation, and quasi‑experimental designs.

Develop and apply advanced causal and statistical models such as treatment‑effect and uplift models, difference‑in‑differences, synthetic controls, propensity‑score matching, instrumental variables, and observational causal techniques.

Translate complex causal findings into executive‑ready insights, clearly communicating assumptions, limitations, uncertainty, and business implications.

Partner with senior business and product leaders to frame ambiguous, high‑stakes problems, define learning agendas, and determine the right analytical or experimental approach.

Connect leading indicators to lagging outcomes to demonstrate how product and operational levers causally impact revenue, conversion, retention, and customer experience.

Influence roadmap and investment decisions by identifying high‑ROI opportunities and quantifying trade‑offs through experimentation and modeling.

Set technical standards and best practices for experimentation and causal analysis, mentoring senior data scientists and raising the overall analytical maturity of the organization.

What You’ll Bring

Deep expertise in causal inference and experimentation with a strong track record of applying these methods to real‑world business decisions.

Advanced modeling and statistical skills, including causal modeling, experimental design, and large‑scale observational analysis.

Strong technical proficiency in SQL, Python, and/or R, with experience on complex, high‑volume data systems.

Strategic and systems thinking, able to connect business objectives, product strategy, and analytical methods end‑to‑end.

Executive influence without authority, shaping decisions through rigor, clarity, and credibility.

10+ years of experience in data science, applied research, or advanced analytics roles at a principal or staff level.

Retail, eCommerce, or marketplace experience is a plus, including pricing, supply chain, merchandising, or digital platforms.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 5 years of analytics experience; OR

Master’s degree in the same fields and 3 years of analytics experience; OR

7 years of analytics or related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Econometrics.

Publications or active peer review in related journals or conferences.

Experience in Python, Spark, Scala, or R, and open‑source frameworks such as scikit‑learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.

Knowledge of Web Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2 AA) and inclusive digital experience design.
