About the Role The Network Engineer will be a key member of our team serving as the Onsite Engineer for the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) Academic Network. The Engineer will be responsible for the design, operation, optimization, and sustainment of Extreme Networks infrastructure across DLIFLC’s multi‑site campus. DLIFLC delivers critical language education to military and federal personnel, and this role directly supports that mission by ensuring secure, high‑performance network operations.
Job Responsibilities
Monitor, test, and analyze all elements of the network facilities
Identify and resolve hardware and software issues related to the commercial network’s wireless and hardwired elements
Perform tuning, optimization, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Extreme hardware/software
Perform traffic/capacity analysis, trend analysis, and performance monitoring
Conduct software release planning, documentation, and license management
Serve as Senior Network Architect for Extreme Networks infrastructure
Lead high‑priority network projects and upgrades using Extreme devices
Serve as the primary on‑site escalation contact for Extreme products and issues
Provide technical training and knowledge transfer to DLIFLC IT staff
Ensure 99%+ network uptime and proactively mitigate risks
Submit weekly reports and coordinate with Extreme Networks Global TAC
Qualifications
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance
BA/BS degree in IT, Engineering, or related field with five (5+) years of experience, OR AA/AS with seven (7+) years of experience
Ten (10+) years of relevant network engineering experience, including Extreme Networks systems
IAT Level II Certification equivalent or higher per DoD 8570/DoD 8140 (CompTIA Security+, GICSP, GSEC, SSCP, etc.)
Certified to work on Extreme Networks products, such as switches, routers, access points, and network management tools
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Certification or equivalent
Proven experience in LAN/WAN, routing, switching, VLANs, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and network security
Experience managing large‑scale network upgrades, migrations, and expansions
Experience configuring and managing Extreme Networks solutions, including Layer 2/3 switching, MLXE switches, Extreme IQ, and routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, and MPLS
Skilled in installing, configuring, and managing VMware NSX environments
Experienced with Ruckus networking technologies, including Layer 2 switches, wireless controllers, and access points
Proficient in deploying and maintaining Palo Alto Networks firewalls, including models PA-7050, PA-3060, PA-3260, and PA-5450, as well as security features such as WildFire and URL Filtering
Knowledgeable in configuring Brocade MPLS Layer 2/3 switches
Familiar with Cisco routers and switches for enterprise networking
Skilled in managing Aruba Networks wireless solutions, including wireless controllers, Airwave, and ClearPass
Experienced with Ciena DWDM optical networking, specifically 100G OME 6500 platforms
Proficient in using network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, InMon Sentinel, and Uptrends
Computing environment certificate (CCSP, CISSP, CCNP, etc.) or equivalent within 6 months of hire
Preferred
DoD Secret Clearance
CE/OS Certification (Computing Environment/Operating System)
Experience working in a Department of Defense (DoD) environment
A problem solver and troubleshooter who thrives in resolving complex problems
Strong self‑starter requiring minimal supervision
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
