Ventilator management, including ARDS protocol

Multidisciplinary tracheostomy management and speaking valves

Education – clinical rotations for local and international respiratory therapy schools, annual respiratory education for nursing and physicians, departmental continuing education lectures, professional development opportunities, teamwork, interdisciplinary care, advances in academic medicine

Cardiovascular surgical unit, Level III NICU, two medical ICUs, trauma/neuro ICU, pulmonary care unit (4 bed), general floors

Respiratory Therapist Responsibilities

Provide routine and intensive therapy, diagnostic procedures, and patient assessments per licensure, certification, training, and regulatory requirements.

Maintain and stock respiratory equipment; ensure ventilator and life support equipment are operable.

Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

Demonstrate interpersonal skills, confidentiality, and adaptability to changing priorities.

Basic computer skills and customer service skills are required.

Identify and address needs of the population served.

Minimum of 0–1 year full‑time experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist in an acute care setting.

Qualifications

Graduation from an approved two‑year respiratory therapist program

Licensed by the District of Columbia Health Regulation

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) licensed and certified by NBRC

Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) licensed or RRT (eligible for registration within one year)

BLS Basic Life Support for Health Care Professionals required

ACLS and PALS within six months of hire

Excellent critical thinking, communication, and problem‑solving skills

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
